got up to Teeside steelworks one day with lime, the bloody tipper wouldn’t work iicr the body only went up 2 rams,
only one way out shovel. 21 ton no safety glasses god the eyes did some running.Times have changed the days when you delivered a load of milk to the dairy then offloaded the empty churns and loaded 200 bushels of grains by hand shovelled the load off at a farm then back on with the churns ready for morning
Hiya…did you do nestles at ashbourne malmic■■? i had a couple of uncles work in the dairy and one Jack Crooks did the churns and grains,
it was awhile back he had a small cab TS3 commer and later the bigger cab commer but with a perkins engine.
Was Jack Crooks any relation to Ken Crooks, also from Ashbourne?
Steve
hiya answer to two questions Jack was Kens uncle ken married Edgar Bentleys daughter Marion, when Ken give up
with lorries he went working in the garage for Edgar. Ken was my second cousin really but my mum was brought up
as Kens sister so he was always uncle…kans lad Richard works at Frank Wrights. he was in transport but i think hes
in the works now…
second question Richo,s YES…it was a good paying job. we did push the limits though…i got in big trouble with a log
book offence…it wasn’t my fault (we,ve all herd that before) due to me been handy with spanners wires and things i put a radio
in my foden and the heater worked a bit. i,d come home with Phillip Jones in a volvo from Newark, when i got back sunday
Andrew Thompson had taken my Foden and log book, i phoned Richo…you’ll have to manage so i drew up a sheet and carbon copy
sods law who got stopped for a check.■■? John!!! the copper wouldn’t listen and the court was worse…6 months ban. cheers Andrew

I very much doubt if Kens still around lost touch with him years ago.
Found on the tinternet, credit to the original photographer and apologies if it has been posted before. The driver appears to be the Late ■■■■ Bunting who latterly lived at Hulland Ward. ■■■■ was driving a M registered Foden S80 when I started at Ballidon, after that he had a V reg Haulmaster and the Gardner engine knocked a piston out on Ipswich Docks while blowing the load off. I went down later in the day in another Foden to tow him back, it was a night of dense freezing fog and poor ■■■■ was frozen solid as the engine could only be run at tickover so never got warm. My mirrors kept freezing up as well! Feeling sorry for the old lad we swapped over after a couple of hours so I froze instead! We landed back around midnight, dropped his tank outside his house and collected it next morning.
This poor scan by me is from a book on Parwich which was the nearest village of any size to Ballidon Quarry, approximately a mile away as the crow flies!

Haha! I followed that thing to jobs a few times during Cobwebs ownership, then later, when Stevie Dunn had it, he followed me!!

One of the most uncomfortable lorries I’ve driven, but probably one of the best driveline.

I drove one of John Palins Cargo’s for an hour Mick and, after having Fodens with a well sprung cab and rubber suspension, it felt like my spine and breastbone were knocking together! They probably cost less than a Foden though. Like you say, the oily parts were decent as thankfully Ford had no part in building the engine, box or axles. The later rubber sprung ones may have given a better ride?

What’s up with you lot ? I thought you all liked looking into the past.Anyway Ford designed it to let you chaps make money i.e. fuel consumption, weight and spares price. As you know I’m very Ford minded and they did have a few brake problems which was sorted. The owners I sold them to always said " You know that motor I bought from you " you know it’s alright but if it wasn’t it would be " You know that motor you sold me"
Tony
Agreed those Ford’s made money for the owner operators Tony, and presumably the driver’s as well. A good job really as the Osteopaths would relieve them of a lot of it in later life.

I wonder if it was the motors they drove before the Fords and another point,John Palin didn’t have a 24t so how can anybody compare

Haha, good try Tony! Palins was only a 7.5 tonner but every pot hole and rut seemed to jar up through my spine. Short wheelbase Bedfords and Leyland Clydesdale/Freighters with no cab suspension system were as bad so the driver’s used to tell me, so not just a Ford thing. Luckily I only ever had Sed Ak’s 400’s and Fodens to drive for a living and they rode quite well for a basic truck.

Eric Barker bought his Iveco because he had back trouble AND Malcolm Hadfield bought his Cargo for the same reason and then another one
Must have been all that bouncing and shaking around loosened up the back. Seriously I’m not going to knock the cargo because it was a good workhorse but it definitely was far from the most comfortable lorry I drove.

John Biesty Foden S39 (Peakstone) tipping tarmac sometime in the 70s
Tilcon Dodge tipping tarmac
I wonder where that Dodge was based John? Ballidon ran four wheeler’s before my time there (Bedford KM’s I think) but it seems to be painted in the later Tilcon livery with the Mercedes Red band around the cab. Perhaps young Michael (malmic) can shed some light on it? Interesting pics you keep finding though.
