Hi rigsby.
Heres a couple of Barlow Hodgkinsons Foden photos given to me by Flatman 001 who is a regular on this forum. He has some fantastic old photo’s
John.

You should remember this company.

The second picture E903 FRY was my dad’s lorry,he drove for them right up until Derek Barlow retired, lovely to see!

B&H hadn’t had those trailers long when they sold up ,can’t remember exactly now but Ben Bennett had one of them triaxled on to air with greedy boards ,can’t think who bought the other I remember putting a handbrake cable on one about 92 ish perhaps ?

Welcome Pottypeg, does your dad still drive these days? Some lads on here will probably know him.

Pete.

who was your dad potty peg ? that motor came to hazelcroft complete with driver when derek sold up . the late jimmy buxton , ian clayton i can’t just recall the other came with the lorries . cheers , dave

rigsby:
b&h finished in 1991 i think dan , hazel croft bought the e and f reg artic tankers , the rest were only fit for scrap . 3 of barlows drivers came with them . jimmy buxton rip , ian clayton and ron ? lived in the houses at the bottom of alsop moor . i got one of the e reg , what a state ! there were 5 rings on the bunk where they had carried the spare drums of diesel , took some doing to get the cab liveable . jimmy buxton said he got nearly twice the wages running legal at hazel croft than he got at barlows doing twice the work running bent . cheers , dave

Ron Steeples, my dad!!

just noticed the marching ton foden , gerald morris had it new and drove it until marching ton sold-out . he used to wash the body down with diesel to stop the lime sticking to it ( well it was only about 15p a gallon then )

Ron Steeples, sadly no, he had to pack up driving around 94/95 due to failing eyesight( glaucoma) sadly he is now in a nursing home with advanced dementia.

hell yes , i remember ron , sorry about the name , put it down to my age . last time i saw ron was about 2002 , i called by barlows old yard for directions to some out of the way place near biggin and ron was doing renovations on the buildings . cheers , dave

That name rings a bell Pottypeg, cannot just put a face to it though. I did know a few Barlows men and occasionally gave Tom Harrison a lift from Pikehall up to Newhaven after he retired.

Pete.

i’m really sorry to hear about your dad potty peg , good hard working man , he certainly earned his corn grafting for barlows . he deserves a better old age than that regards , dave

Here he is in another one.

Pottypeg, are you related to Frank Steeples who worked at Ballidon quarry for years blasting holes in it?

Pete.

Very distant relation I think, don’t know if you knew a Derek Steeples worked in bagging shed for years, that was dad’s cousin.

Yes I knew Derek! Or rather I knew a Homepride Flour Grader who I understood was Derek underneath the dust, he was the only person in the bagging shed who put more lime on himself than in the bags!! He always managed to have space around him in the canteen, can’t think why? I had 27 years around Ballidon so knew a lot of folk, Mick Salt (Malmic on here) would have put in a ‘longer shift’ than me though.

Pete.

I don’t look old enough well I don’t feel old enough, but I did 40 years running out of Ballidon most of them happy, apart from the last 2 or 3.

I thought that it would be around that time Mick, I would have got 40 in myself if I hadn’t had to finish early (12 years ago now!) and enjoyed most of it. A question for you, was it better for you lads when Tilcon had their own fleet, the eight wheeler’s wouldn’t really affect your work on four and six wheeler’s but I just wondered if they helped keep the rates up? As you know I did a fair bit for RMC who still had their own transport and the few od’s they had seemed to think so. I remember one haulier in Ballidon (a six wheeler owner) saying that it would be great when their quarries own transport went as there would be a lot more work for the od’s but I’m not certain that was the case.

Pete.

I never went along with that Pete I felt that Tilcon kept the rates stable and we’d be worse off if they didn’t have a fleet and I think that’s what happened.
