That’s what I thought Mick, still we had some good times! It will never be as good again anywhere I reckon. Dave (the Renegade) on here lives close to the Gore quarry and I think the lads there were happy when Tilcon ran it before ‘you know who’ came on the scene!

A couple of nice Tilcon pics there Bonkey. Both Ballidon quarry based. SRA 649K, Foden S50, was driven in ‘my time’ by Hugh ‘Bay’ Spencer who now exhibits some Military vehicles at local shows. I remember taking the 12 speed gearbox out and the screw in lifting eye ripped all the threads out of the box, however a suitably shaped piece of timber thumped in with a hammer filled the space until the truck was sold! I rebuilt the Gardner 6LXB and it was a flyer, I seem to recall that he was doing a delivery to a prison on the Isle of Wight one day and had some problems getting on and off of the ferry due to it’s weight… A Foden S83 replaced it, then later Hugh got a Sed Ak 400, GWJ 823V, which became my first truck after he had swapped over to a powder tanker.
PRA 344K was driven by the Late Gerald Handley, I remember going down to Leicester Forest Services to it when a rear hub caught fire. I replaced the bearings etc and while I was there a chap with a foreign Mercedes truck who needed some fan belts replacing offered me some pound notes if I fitted them for him! Not a problem, except it was the model with no tilt cab where you got to the engine from behind the cab steps so I earned my ‘tip’ that day.
PRA’s Gardner 6LXB developed the famous ‘Gardner Knock and smell’ when it was a few years old so it was decided to have the engine rebuilt and a S40 cab fitted which gave it a few more years life. There is a pic of it on elsewhere on this thread. Gerald later retired and I was told that he had taken his dogs for a walk, sat down in his chair, and passed away peacefully. Just a load of useless information, but a few memories for me!!
Dan Punchard:
GRA332H Erf would that photo be in Ball Eye Quarry ?
I think that it is Matlock Bath station Dan, there were a couple of ‘Bath lads’ who drove for them. Lenny Frost was one, he later worked at Slinters.
OOPS! Just re-read Dan’s question, I was refering to the Ball Eye Scammel! I think that the ERF might be in Harvey Dale quarry, I used to park there, though of course it could be Ball Eye…or somewhere else…
Where’s harvey Dale pete ? ,I’ve not seen a Ball eye lorry before ,would that be from the mansfield sand days of ownership or pitch mastic or from the days of Bob Allsop ,I pressume the M at the bottom of the door is for mansfield ? ,did Thomas Wards have a go in Ball eye too ?

So many questions Dan! Harvey Dale is/was on Matlock Dale just before John Hadfield House, fenced off now I think? There was an old bus parked there for ages with dossers camping in it. I think the Scammell would be in Mansfield Sand’s time, Clarence Kirk from Hope Terrace in the Bath drove for them so it was probably his truck. Pitchmastic colours were blue/ yellow I seem to remember, I wasn’t aware of Tommy Wards having an interest there though?

Think the erf could have been Eric Bellamys think he might have had a later erf that ended up with your old gaffer Pete the one & only Eric van Gough
Aye, Eric had owned an ERF like that one when he first came into Ballidon. I didn’t know Eric Bellamy. Phil Hawkins had it off of him when he splashed out on that B series I think? I don’t think that I would have ‘volunteered my services’ if he had still been running it when I jumped ship!!
Hiya trying to think of a chaps name !! help me out…Peter ■■? did some bag work out of Balidon he had a green
and red S 21 6 wheeler after running that for years he had
a 6 wheeler Haulmaster twin headlights…he used to sell second hand sheds. youd see him with a sky high load coming
in towards Derby at tea time…i can t think of his name… is he still alive. the type of chap who ll be at it when hes 80.
