At long last one of Ashton Vernons trucks(knew I wasn’t going senile) This company ran a fleet of LAD Dodge tippers during the 60s running stone from the Buxton quarries along with the likes of Allinsons,Callaghan,Lambs etc,(if my memory serves me right) they were at one time called Ashton Holmes(anyone remember them)
the cafe on long hill was jack’s cafe , i’ve spent [ misspent? ] many hours in there . in the latter days the melland bros owned it , they had a scrap yard at the back , and there are still a few vintage yankee motors on the front where the garage used to be . it was the favoured call in for johnson"s wire lorries on the way back to ambergate . when the chapel bypass opened , they demolished the cafe & built a bungalow on the site . cheers , dave

Hiya Stanfield… aston holmes/vernons had a builders yard in Macc(pig of a place to get into)on a motor bike ha ha .
they also had a builder,s yard nr the rounabout on the A34 going into wilmslow a pal of mine was the manager in the 70/80,s.
Travis perkins have the macc depot dont know about the other one its bypassed now.
John
hells bells john , what a bloody place to get into at sutton sidings . we couldn’t turn in with an artic , we had to reverse down the road opposite & drive straight in . if you tried to turn in , theback of the unit locked on the trailer chassis . when we had tipped the f l driver had to lift the trailer round as the way out was too tight for a 40 footer . the yard at wilmslow is donkey lane , still there , the entrance is improved now , but it is still a pokey hole , in fact all ashton vernon’s yards are pokey holes ! cheers , dave

Hi John.Is high Lane between Whaley Bridge and Chapel? If so the cafe was on the left heading towards Chapel and I used it quite often when running back to Staveley Chemicals.I wonder if it was open when Mam Tor was a through road to Castleton and Sheffield as I probably used it then as well.I know Mam Tor was open in the late 60s/early 70s as it was an alternative route to Sheffield to keep away from the Ministry!
Memory not as good as it was
Hiya …i think we,re mixed up here long hill goes from whaley bridge straight into Buxton.
Chapel is on a diffrent route thats where we stopped at the cafe on the left just before
chapel at tungstead milton oppersite the garage that had the tankers IICR j morton or j morden
i think he carried water. his units was red.
now High lane is only 2or so mile out of Hazel grove before Disley.there was a cafe nr the rail bridge
at hazel grove and a little lorry park.(now closed)
There was a cafe in whaley bridge but was,nt it bad parking. mind you i was usuall running with another artic
so squezing 2or3 lorries in was always a pain.
Dose anyone remember that cafe near the lights going out of Buxton towards the leek/ cat n fiddle road.
We could always park on the roadside no damed yellow lines or traffic wardens was there.
That cafe is still going at wardlow dip but the cafe at stoney middleton looks bleak i came past about 4 weeks ago.
I do,nt know if Bradwell village is off the betten track nowadays but there was a good little cafe there in the late 70,s
it was always full of tipper drivers.

I knew I’d be wrong John. But I got the cafe placed right just the wrong village . Do you mean the old “Lover’s Leap” cafe in Stoney Middleton? Last time I was over I passed it and it looked closed,in a right state.Didn’t there used to be a cafe at Taddington near that pub - the Waterloo I think,on the left? I don’t think that cafe in Bradwell is still open,if there’s any B.M.Charles lads on here they might know.
Wasn’t the cafe near Whaley Bridge called the Santa Anna or similar? Never used that road myself as Long Hill was our route North, before the by pass.
Pete.

Hiya windrush top marks i was talking to the chap i worked for in Buxton only last week and he could,nt remember.
I knew it was something Exotic well it was warm and the food was good.I think it may have been one word but thats
very very close
John
Hiya, is this the one your thinking of
And how about this one
Ray
The one I was thinking of on High Lane was about 3mile out of Hazel Grove just around the bend from Simpsons factory which was on the right and the cafe which has now reverted back to an house was on the left going towards Disley. The name of it was Georges cafe, all the wagons used to park on the main rd opposite it,I think it was the 1st house in a block of three(this was in the 60s remember)

Oh well, I got the Santa bit right (time of year I guess!) but the ladies name wrong. Wardlow Mires still does good food, my long retired mate pops down one Sunday morning each month to have his breakfast and really enjoys it. Being an ex tipper man cafes were an alien object to me, you didn’t earn much brass sitting in them!
Pete.
Hiya …well done windrush you saved the day…you know why we sat in the cafe,s THE mechanic always took hours to find us
as we always broke down very very near a cafe. nod nod wink wink.
have a good christmas. see you at llandudno is that the first for you■■? i do weston park first.
cheers John

Not doing Llandudno next year John, we are having a change of scene and trying a little event closer to home at Flixton, Manchester, if I can get in! Oh and a good Christmas to you as well, I reckon that our path’s will cross somewhere in 2011.
Pete.

I remember the old Mires cafe but never had time to stop…
never stopped there loaded chris , if you set off loaded , you were stuck in 2nd gear all the way to the anchor , about 8 mph .
