Dave, with an AEC MK3 and a load of benzene for Shell at Carrington from Staveley Chem,if I’d stopped at Mires I would have been late at Shell and the load would have “gone off”.Also there were others on the same job and I hated queueing. You must have worked for BRS .
It’s 40 years ago since I was on that job…

Found this on the net thought it might be of some interest0

Hiya… now did,nt Tony Heathcote have the Anchor for a while then went to the waterloo at taddington on the twin track. Tony was on a brick lorry

hazelcroft are still there pete , they sold the fleet in 93 & just ran the garage , then the bosses nephew bought him out & started up transport again . they were dafaid agents for a while , but now just run transport . i think they have about 14 or 15 motors now , fodens , dafs & scanias . i retired from there in 04 & my son still drives for them . all the motors are now plain white . cheers dave
Pleased to hear that they are still operating Dave, I do pass by regularly and have a pal who lives just across the way but I had thought that the wagon’s were just stored there for other folk. Is the place a depot for HGV DIRECT as well?
Pete.

No John, didn’t know that there was a mag man there, I have mine done by a guy in Chelmorton! My mate lives on the small back road between Batham Gate and Doveholes, he used to run a lorry or two but hasn’t got any now.
Pete.
yes pete , hgv direct rent the front of the garage , keltruck had 2 bays for a time & central transport had a portacabin in the yard , they had about 10 new tippers there . they ``````& keltruck vanished overnight when the recession started to bite . i think a couple of outside hauliers rent parking as well at the moment , cheers , dave
Apologies if I’ve mentioned this before but there was another haulier called Mountain who ran Fodens? in a similar colour to Hazlecrofts wasn’t there? They were early starters as I used to see them on the Derby Ring Road when I was “having an hour” in that lay-by at Markeaton Park near the Derbyshire Yeoman pub.I would get in there about 0200 from either Ross or Chepstow homeward bound and Mountains would whizz round the island and away, probably to South Wales. Were they from Wirksworth - I can’t remember.

Yes Chris, I think that Bonkey has a few pics of Mountain’s on the forum. They used to keep long hours, but then didn’t we all if there was work? Bill Mountain passed away a few years ago and his son Ian runs a few tippers on contract to Tar**c and Agg Industries. Their yard used to be on Coldwell Street in Wirksworth but they are now based at Longcliffe. I think that some of the driver’s went to Mountain’s when W H Phillips finished in the eighties.

Aye,we all worked long hours when the work was there Pete and we’ve all sat in cafes and heard what some drivers did for a days work . If you didn’t do it the cash was rubbish so you got stuck in and tried to be flexible with the log sheets (best thing since sliced bread) and in later years the log book.
I heard one or two rumours about W H Philips and the work they did with those Atkis, what happened to them, were they closed down?
WH Phillips closed due to financial problems (I was told) Chris. They bought out Sid Cook’s fleet from Wessington for the A license and inherited massive debts because of it, a lot of the later Sed Ak 400’s were leased I believe. They had a large garage/workshop in Wirksworth, a pillow firm own it now, and had a large fleet in their heyday with up to 40 trucks in our quarry alone! Tilcon inherited a few drivers from them at Ballidon when I worked there, they were good lads who knew what work was all about! Phillips also had some tippers based in Tunstead quarry when the tarmac plant was in operation back in the sixties, they had a few Dodge chinese sixes with a Primrose axle added and their wagons were used by Primrose for their advert in Commercial Motor magazine. A shame that they closed, but where would 90 + tipper’s find work nowadays?
Pete.

Yes I know Bert well enough Dave, he had a few Volvo’s in Ballidon and then just ran a Volvo artic which he drove himself delivering chippings to Pye Bridge and a bit of coal from Oxcroft. I last saw Bert at Newark Tractor Show in November and he still looks well enough.

Pic of said tar plant back in 1998.
Apparently, it was left in situ right up til 2004 even though it was last used in the mid to late 70s!

As if by magic…
Finally, just a few odds and ends from me all taken in '96.
Shining Bank quarry.
Ballidon quarry.
Ex Steve Fletcher (and ex Tarmac)
And a few at Jasper Goodwin’s yard at Waterswallows.
Finally, this was taken at Caldon Low commercials (based at the quarry). Unsure if the driver got out alive! (Hope he did!)
