TIPIT:
On a different note, does anyone know if L & M Allens from Bredbury have finished, I’ve just noticed I haven’t seen any of there lorries around lately.
They use to always be seen delivering to a concrete plant in Gorton up to about a year ago.

I think that Allen’s are still operating as an ex o/d from our quarry was driving for them recently, and I spotted one of their artics on the M180 heading towards Immingham back in August.

Pete.

Thanks for that Pete.

I 've been playing around with Paint Shop and come up with this from the B/W version found earlier, luckily it didn’t take much. …Paul.

Hiya… thats some paint job you,ve done Tipit.its brought them to life.can you colour the six parked in the quarry■■?.
I remember Callaghan,s 6 leggers running through Leek to the potteries BUT i would have sworn the tilt cabs was Marshall,s and not
Leylands, i never noticed when i looked at the b/w photos just shows, because the mk5,s was AEC you took it for granted
the tilt cabs was also AEC. I can,nt think of many other company that had long wheelbase 6 legger Leyland tippers. But Marshalls was quite
common in long wheel base form. I,ve got a short wheelbase mk5 at the moment and everyone thinks its been cut down because its so short,
Infact they,re so short you could,nt cut anymore off the chassis as the wheels are right at the back now

Hi John, Yeah i 'll give it a go next, I wanted to colour all of the Callaghan pics in time. I 've just took a look again at the line up of thiers in the quarry and you are right, the part showing Ergo nearest the camera has got the AEC chrome bumper and full size top grill.

Here it is John, what livery is your Mk 5 at the moment ? … Paul.

Hiya …Top marks there Tipit. This is mine as i brought her, Ive done some work on the brakes and just sorting out the charging side.
we need a steering wheel and some Headlights but as you know it keeps going on.I,ve had everything electrical working but not
through the ignition…only bypassing the key…she,s only 2 owners from new 1964.I think the turntable will have to go.
The diffs are a bit low only 45 mph.

something in the making i think.
John

Would Jack Critchlow qualify as a Peak District haulier? Dennis. We once had a driver in SOT who had worked for Critchlows.Dennis.

Hiya …Bewick…(dennis) sorry he,s a stoke lad can you remember his name■■?..you would,nt have me as a Bewick lad although
i delivered Betz chemicals to Croppers,would you■■?.
Cheers John

Apart from The Adams MK5 Mandators that’s the only other one I’ve seen with twin headlights John, are they knackered as I see you are after some?

Critchlows were from Biddulph weren’t they John? I cant remember the drivers name that was from SOT.Dennis.

It’s strange but I can’t recall Callaghans at all, and I was running to Manchester through Buxton a lot in the eighties? Perhaps it wasn’t a bad thing though, given what I have read on here!!! It sounds as if they would have given Allinsons a run for their money! :open_mouth:

Pete.

Callaghans came and went in the 60s/70s.They made the Hell Drivers look slow them AECs would pass anything.

3300John:

That a tough looking beast John, did they make many with those headlights and suicide doors ? where were M.W. Services based ?

Hiya…tipit she was new to a company called Partridge from Cassington Witney Oxford. I belive she was used for a wrecker or towing truck
by the same company untill 2000 a chap from Hook then had her for ten years now me.

Windrush i thought you would have remembered the Callaghan lads. i don,t know if they drove very fast or the older Fodens was,nt
as swift as the Mk5,s,but they really seemed to stand out for somthing or other perhaps overtaking in a 30 mph area was,nt a done thing.

The twin headlight was s surprise to me. Adams had Tillotsons to modify the parkroyal cabs to twinheadlights for night driving and you
could see the 7inch shape on the cab and the 5ins slotted inside. This is the only i,ve seen with twins from new, the cab is shaped for twin 5inch
They work ok but the chrome has gone dull…The doors well thats a RTS(cab manufactuer)trade mark, They made the London brick cab
and it seemed they had quite a few with suicide doors.one has that crew cab on, it was a training lorry and is still on the show seen.
I ve looked at all the orange muck shifting lorries on the motorway work and they all seemed to have 7 inch lights.
John

Lomas Distribution get about a bit, even to the far-off shores of the Isle of Man…

hi pete , you were lucky you missed the brief reign of callaghans . i drove for marchington & when callaghan took over our lorries had callaghan & marchington on the doors . we were on lime to s.wales & coal back . the callaghan side was on tarmac & concrete agg . i never had much to do with them , except to take damaged ones into tillotsons for repair & collect new ones [ sat overtime] . they tried to muscle into ici in a big way , but longsons had the whip hand as preferred haulier & that was that . they lasted less than 2 years cheers rigsby[ dave ]

Couple of scans from CM from way back when.
Apparently some sort of ‘tip in’ done in Tunstead quarry of a saturday afternoon. (Must have had nothing better to do! )

BonkeyDollocks:

Reading that is pretty depressing. The situation seems to have got a lot worse since 1969, not better. Mainly because what little power the hauliers had has been totally removed by the ‘contract haulier’ situation, giving the big quarries licence to treat people like ■■■■.

The article suggests that hauliers used to get paid per mile on a fixed deal (i.e. 10miles pays half what 20miles does - not sure if this is right?), if so, that went by the by a long time ago… :imp:

I agree with that Hammer, when I drove for Tilcon one o/d said that he would be glad when our wagons had gone as it would mean more work for the o/d’s. What they failed to grasp is that while the quarries ran their own fleet’s the rates were kept decent, thing’s soon altered once the fleet was sold off! You can always find work if you don’t mind doing it for nowt. :unamused:

Pete.
