Here’s a GP tank of Sammys borrowed from Bonkeys( Longson )thread
God I remember that god awful p.o.s.8 gears, 385hp @44t =18mph up the M1 towards J22.luckily I only drove it a handful of times. We used tanks like that for carrying liquid lime, evil stuff when it was snowing and you were trying to get up out of Tunstead. Luckily I was on powder tanks 99% of the time and mainly out of Hindlow.Shame what happened to Sammys, then AK.

Any of you lads remember H.Pheasey from Bakewell (or was it Ashford)and if they are still going? I don’t think they had tippers,I only recall them running flats.
Chris
Pheasey’s finished a long time ago Chris, my mate drove for them (as did my Neighbour who worked on the NORDE). One of their artics ran away on the A619 from Wadshelf to the island at Baslow and killed a woman in her car, the woman’s daughter started the organization known as BRAKE as a result of her mother’s death and has had a “downer” on lorries ever since. The truck driver was (allegedly) going too fast in top gear, he had alredy caused another death somewhere on the A1 I believe and Pheasey’s closed shortly afterwards. Their yard on the A6 is now a business park and I think that the last of the founders sons died last year, another of the sons was run over and killed by his own lorry during maintenance work.
They ran flats and also used to do milk churn work with petrol engined Bedfords to the Sheffield area.

Pete.
I wondered what happened to them Pete,I didn’t know about all the accidents,he must have been trapping on towards Baslow, the first island nowadays is the one that takes the Sheffield road which is relatively new I think.I remember them taking churned milk into B and C and S and E co-ops in Sheffield but when I lived in Froggatt it was,I think,Shirley and Proctor from Rowsley or Darley Dale that collected from our local farm,I think they had Bedfords as well.
by heck bonkey you have really made me feel my age . that pic of marchington’s fg 8 wheeler , i drove that for 3 months while the regular driver was off sick with a bad back !! mine still aches when i remember it ,no brakes on 2nd steer and on sharp corners you had to stand up to drag the wheel round . it did 32 mph flat out , unless you had the govenor wired , then it did about 42mph .6hours to bristol & 5 hours back empty .those bmc s were strange , the thinnest tipping ram was at the bottom , % ball mounted , so if you were tipping on the road camber they leaned at an alarming angle . your photos are brilliant , i only wish i had some that i could post , but a burst pipe at home put paid to the few i had . keep up the good work , rigsby

I will be seeing one of Pheasey’s old drivers on sunday up at The Winking Man John, he lives in Ashford so I will ask him about that chap. Not sure about the Lowe (Matlock Transport) connection though, will ask him that as well!

John, I am up at the Winking Man on sunday. There is a small vintage rally there, they have a couple each year, we use the carpark and anyone is welcome to call in as you don’t need to book for the event. Pop up if you have time, there will be a few engines and perhaps some old transport.
Regarding the ■■■■■■■ sump, Stephen Dale sorted one for the guy and it is now fitted. Just need to find the truck some work, not good in the tipper job around these parts and in fact the chap might be calling it a day come “back end”.
A couple of pics taken today while I was passing through Buxton & Chapel
Buxton centre parked on car park near railway arch.
Sammys old yard @ Chapel.

hi lads, this motor is from your neck of the woods, took this photo at holyhead, it was loaded with horses from Ireland, driver had about 20 shunts to get round the junction, think the skids had locked up inside of trailer, other wise he had no power steering, bumper
Hi Paul (Tipit) I would presume that this is part of the family that lived over on Long Hill Buxton. Can you shed any light on the subject.I took this on sunday 31st Oct at a rally in Huddersfield, not seen it before at any other rallies.

hello john , bob garlick is a different family , i think he farms in the sparrowpit/peak forest area . he used to go to a lot of shows with robert somerset with his erf . i know he kept saying he would like one of his own . if i know bob he got the tk at the right price , not a man to spend a quid when he could get away aith 10 bob , cheers rigsby [dave ]
Hi John, A new/old tipper on the show scene eh !!
That one brings back memories of a light blue one, Brian? Luke from Whaley Bridge had.
It had 2 eyes painted on the front along with the script … “Look who’s here”
I think it was Bob Garlick, that owned an 8 wheeler ERF or Foden working out of Eldon Hill with my dad in the late 70’s.
On a different note, does anyone know if L & M Allens from Bredbury have finished, I’ve just noticed I haven’t seen any of there lorries around lately.
They use to always be seen delivering to a concrete plant in Gorton up to about a year ago.
Hiya…just thinking out loud here…If you look on page three there are two bedfords loading stone( one i think is at tunstead works)
anyhow it looks like they reversed upto a shoot.I was wondering if the newer atki,s had higher sides than the bedford maybe they
would,nt have got under the shoot. so the tailbords was lower just missing the shoot. It was before my day in the quarries.
I like the photo of the AEC mamoth major at hazel grove i remember her well.
DB… i,ve just got a AEC mamoth major 6 (to show)the same wheel base as callaghan AEC. if i painted her black and orange other show
exibits would tremble at the thought of the Callaghan wizzing around…like they did or seemed to.
john
hiya john , i think the lwb bedford could be loading plaster lime [ 7 to 9 inch ] & the swb with the mucky cab is probably on bullheads [ half burnt stone to the tip ]. i can’t remember the kilns yard like that john , it must be pre 1960 'cheers dave
