Paying for fuel

as our firm dont use fuel cards i tend to use my own credit card when i need to top up (small tank lonnnng journeys) this isnt a problem to me as the money is promptley refunded in cash as soon as i get back to the yard
BUT (and as i said to our lass ,its a big but) when i go into whichever petrol station it happens to be ,they demand that i leave my credit card with them :open_mouth: .
even if i offer to pay first then draw the fuel they wont have it ,leave the lorry keys ,not good enough, leave a kidney ,no, its got to be the card ,if i say no they say no fuel , :unamused: is it me :unamused:
when i point out its my personel card and if i was to hand it over my fraud cover would be void it cuts no ice
have drivers got such a bad rep that we’re all classed as theiving untrustworthy scum …
oh just read what i wrote
answers itself really

we’re treated like thieving scum, so had to vote yes

driveoffs have happened in the past, so a few scumbags have messed it up for all of us :imp: :imp: :imp:

maybe should have put “ARE WE TREATED LIKE THEIVING SCUMBAGS?”

To be honest we have fuel card and always fuel up before handing it in, never normally a problem so voted no.

Should have the option for…shall i get a job where i don’t have to use “my” credit card!

Sod that for a game of soldiers. :unamused:

If you use your own credit card, does that mean you get the full nectar/drivers club points etc then?

My AMEX card gives me 1.5% cashback on all purchases, at the end of the year in a big lump sum. Running a lorry on that would get me a nice bit of cash at the end of the year, especially if I handed a nectar card over as well.

Tempting to find a company that DOESNT use fuelcards now :>

a company that doesn’t use fuelcards has to pay pump prices though :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: wouldn’t give you much confidence for job security

Imho i dont think it is anything to do with us drivers being theives its more to do with security. How much on average does a tractor unit hold? ( sorry i dont know the answer i drive a 7.5t and only holds about ÂŁ115 worth) From what ive been told at my regular garage if two lorries a day come in and fill up with a few hundred pounds a piece and their card is not approved for wotever reason ( expired / company not payed the bill) thats a lot of money for them to chase. So guys i wouldnt go beating yourselves
up thinking people dont trust you or think you are thieves. If anyone knows
different i`ll stand corrected…

wouldn’t DREAM of leaving my credit card out of my sight!!!
far too easy for the filling station staff to make a copy of it

What Del said.

TOOOOOOOOOOOOOO risky!

My firm has a big diesel tank in the yard, so it’s not an issue for me (thank zb!)

own credit card? Thats a new one on me!

There are plenty of “drive offs” by car drivers with £60 worth of fuel, a drive off by a lorry drover with £600 worth of fuel would be much worse for the retailer, I guess they are just making sure they dont lose out.

It is one of my pet hates although now I only have to use my Shell card occasionally at unmanned sites or I use my Lafon badge at company depots.

However on a slightly different point, I had cause to use my debit card in Ashford. The cash machine was broken yet again. To draw cash from Travelex, I had to show some id, (aka) a drivers licence. I had to hand my debit card to the cashier and also use chip and pin technology, so the cashier now has the chance to make a note of my security number, has my address and also my card details, and the banks tell us we have to guard ourselves against fraud. :open_mouth:

As for ID another driver had his digital tachograph card and they wouldnt accept that :exclamation:

Forgive me if im wrong, all the petrol stations i go to have cameras reading number plates left right and centre. We live in a Big Brother society so im presuming that all the vehicles(cars AND lorries) have their reg plate scanned BEFORE the fuel is released, which in theory means, if you bog off wi’out paying, they track the lorry/car down and send you a hefty bill.

Another thing…how much does a car with £60 pound of fuel weigh?
How much does a Lorry with a full tank weigh.

Which would be the slowest at getting away■■? :bulb: :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

We have fuel cards in ours but i`m in a hire truck this week so the gaffer has given us cash out of his pocket for fuel so no problems like that but overall i would have to agree that we are considered as an untrustworthy bunch

We have fuel cards and have never had problems, but I have seen signs asking for ID b4 drawing. Once saw a poor driver filling out a ‘failed payment’ form for £470 of fuel when his fuel card had been refused :frowning:

We get nectar points/driver club points with fuel card, however us drivers have been told we must not collect them after some bod in office complained that they are technically taxable :open_mouth:

On the plus side pump prices have been known to be cheaper than some fuelcards.

If I am asked to hand my fuelcard over I ask them to sign a disclaimer stating that they will be responsible for any fraud…no signature means I go to a different garage and start over again.

or

Just use an automated site. No leaving cards.

In 12 years of european driving I have only been asked to have the card checked not handed in just that it’s in date etc.etc. TWICE.

Mine too, and this is exactly what I was thinking, Alex!

After a quick-tot up, doing a 5 day week I’d get about £613 a year at today’s fuel prices. :sunglasses:

However, I believe AMEX, and other providers put a ceiling on cashback below this amount. :frowning:

That said…having been the victim of card fraud recently, I’m not certain I’d want to leave my own card behind the counter with some herbert I don’t know from Adam. In my case, all money was refunded as I had done nothing wrong to allow the fraudsters to get my details.

However, having worked for a bank in the past, I’m not at all certain that leaving your card behind the counter would be accepted by a financial institution as having taken ‘all reasonable precautions’ to prevent access to your card details by a third party, were they to investigate.

Suppose its ok doing it if you know the company and know your going to get your money back quickly.

I was working with one company and truck needed fuel was a problem with it drinking too much and prob run also too long. Anyway they asked me to use my credit card to fill the truck up i told them i didnt have one which was a lie.

Got back to the depot one of the other drivers said its good you never used your own credit card because you would wait months on the companies accountant authorising it before you got your cash back, Supposedly happend to another agency driver. When you come back ask for the cash no one would know how to deal with that or have access or authorisation to give you the money so you would end up going round i circles trying to get the cash,
