Before today I’ve bought a mirror glass for the works vehicle (£12), at the same time the company I work for would not have pressed me for it, but I managed to knock it off less than 2 weeks after having the same mirror replaced so felt a bit of a ■■■■ for it.
I’m sure statistic’s out there will say your average driver has an accident every ##,### miles, and by driving for a living you increase said chances tenfold. My company is great as they don’t expect me to pay for anything, but if it was blind stupidity on my part, I will pay my end.

I’ve replaced (out of my own pocket, company never demanded it) an ad-blue cap because I forgot to replace it, pulled up to pump 1, took cap off, stuck nozzle in, nothing, moved to pump 2, tried again, nothing, so went in to see if there was any ad-blue or whatever, nope, so got in truck and left, cap still sat on pump 1
You seen the price of those things, you only do that once

The mirror wasn’t too bad, I’m racking my memory but can’t remember the first one I hit. The second one was a split second desision to avoid a BMW coming towards me on a narrow part of a ■■■■■■■■ road, I still maintain the mirror hitting the wall was the lesser of two evils.
Twice I’ve collided with Deer and broken the front of the vehicle (usually just a headlight and a grille), just left the company a message “Bambi jumped out on me, very little I could do at 40mph” never been questioned, the parts have been replaced as it’s a hazard of the kind of roads I drive. As I said above though, I feel better knowing I have sorted out anything that was 100% my fault.
Don’t ask me how I managed to back into a copper one day about a week after I started
One of mine. Never had to pay a penny, car was written off, that’s what insurance is for.
For the minor stuff, eg rear lenses etc, as long as it’s not every month then I’d say it’s down to boss, if you have a bonus system in place for damages and it comes out of that, then fair enough, BUT for the major stuff, as long as you haven’t been up to deliberate mischief then it’s disciplinary time and time to ring the insurance co.
Like the chap at our place who filled the sump with adblue on a VW Crafter, engine written off, sure he got a bollocking, but the adblue light was on, he’d not been trained, no handbook, it was an honest mistake, lease co insurance sorted it.
If your working for a co that expect everything to be settled (whether in contract or not) then there not worth working for IMO. Whatever next, putting your own diesel in cos the mpg is a bit down this month or because you wanted the a/c or night heater on, pay for your own GIT cos a pallet fell over, tyres cos you screwed it round, people will be paying to park the bosses truck next .
Is what i am reading here for real? Drivers coughing up for repairs,is this what the job has come to.I feel sad for you all ,glad i retired 22 yrs ago, what a mess Cheers Ted.
Never ever heard the like of this [zb] before, when you employ people thats the chance you take! don’t wonder nobody wants to drive a lorry anymore!! in no other industry would employers get away with this,(I employ 2 drivers, real good guys and it’s never crossed my mind to this) ,I guess thats just the nature of the sort of employers who undercut everyone else then don’t know where the next penny is coming from!!
Boardall used to do it, don’t know if they still do though, drivers used to just walk out during induction when they were told they had to pay for damage apparently, can anyone confirm this…!?
As above…i,ve had my class 1 licence for 36yrs and i,ve never heard of this. When i was 21 and i did some damage the transport manager thumped me or gave me deadleg, and then put me on a 150 gardner Atki as punishment for however long was deemed appropriate.
You young uns dont know ur born!!!
we used to deliver to some water pumping stations down little lanes and things got damaged, one monday there was a letter in trucks saying we pay for damage so waited for office staff to come in at 8 told them all sites we couldn’t do letter was cancelled by 8 15.
Spoke with my guys in the yard this morning, they said very very common thing at firms who employ men from the East!even of heard drivers asked or told to pay for routine mechanical repairs!!
Went for an interview about 5yrs ago at a firm near my house, wages were ■■■■ AND it had 1 of these ‘accident excess’ policies in place. Didn’t take the job offered.
Mate of mine was working for a firm, it got took over by another firm, new T+C’s included an accident waiver for fault accidents, he got charged it once then had it removed, told him to have it removed as soon as it appeared, but he was cocky ‘I don’t have accidents’ type, his 1st was about 2 weeks after this appeared, clipped a car whilst blind side backing into a delivery with a ‘banksman’
It’s not a case of those that have accidents deserve it, as soon as it appears, people have bumps.
Any one trys touching your wages go direct to citenzn advice !
and if you dont think they are above board give VOSA a phone, am sure they would be interested .
failing that go drive the truck into a wall!

Once I was made to pay for the damage I did not made… But they just wanted excuse to do not pay me money they owed to me…
Off course there was nothing like that (there was only about damage caused maliciously) so I went to Employment Tribunal and won everythin back… Greetings to boy from former McLellan’s Transport.
In my current job, I went forward after I went to the ditch in Norway. I felt quilty as they told me to go around and I wanted to go via the hills, as I just love to drive on snow. And I was enjoying myself slightly too much Not that it was really my fault (i just learned hard way, that when you switch traction control in Sprinters, they are not switched off, but put on stand by and when computer thinks that it’s danger, it switches itself on again - so so much for drifting )
We agreed that I will pay 10% of total costs involved.
