pawson and son

anybody know anything about the rumours pawsons have packed in?

i heard last year they were struggling after buying mill transport then they lost a big contract think it was nestle so it might be right :astonished: :astonished: :astonished: :astonished: :astonished: :astonished:

Still plenty of their wagons running about. Can’t see it myself but I stand to be corrected.

Tim from OLT works by them.

They are still running

Used to do a bit subbie work for Mill Transport hauling concrete pipes for Hepworths, just received a letter from them today saying theyve went into voluntary liquidation and asking all creditors to send proof of debt. Thankfully im all paid up and actually never had any problem getting paid. The letter is signed by Stephen Pawson,Director, so dont know if Pawsons are involved or not.
Steve

Just so you know.

Pawsons did buy Mill Transport out last year but the two companies were run as totally separate businesses. How they managed to do that I don’t know. But they did. Mill has now been wound up and no longer exists as a company.

Although being one of the largest ‘independants’ in Yorkshire, Pawsons have lost out on a couple of major contracts in recent months.

When Cadbury Trebor Bassett ‘reorganised’ their business, some of the smaller firms they had taken over went back to the way they were before CTB got involved.

One of these is Monkhill Confectionary. Pawsons, when they lost the Cadbury contract to DHL, (who else ?), also lost the distribution side of the Monkhill business, to Baylis, but remain the haulier of choice for the ‘production to warehouse’ transport.

The other major loss was that of Hepworths at Edlington and Hazlehead, a former Mill contract, to Wincanton.

It is a sad fact of transport industry life that independants like Pawsons very often can not compete with the giants of the industry.

Pawsons continues to operate and hopefully will continue to operate. As you all know though, this business can be very unpredictable at times.

Let’s hope Pawson keeps going Timborosso.I never worked for them but knew one or two of their drivers when they came into Wincanton at Maltby and did a bit of work for us.Not sure how long they have been operating but Pawson was going when I started at Maltby in 1978.
I’ve just heard by the way that the Sainsbury’s contract run by Wincanton from Maltby is being moved to the old Somerfield site at Sherburn-in-Elmet as there is more room there,so I’m waiting to hear what the score for the Maltby site is now.Summat will go in there I’m sure.
I didn’t know Wincanton had the Hepworth contract, the buggers seem to be after everything. :astonished:

As with so many haulage companies Pawsons evolved from a farming business and have been road hauliers since 1921.

As for them going under, I went to the trouble of asking, as several mates work for em, it seems they had a recent cashflow problem, caused by a combination of loss of both the Cadburys and coke cola contracts, plus their willingness to pay their suppliers ASAP instead of using the 30,60,90 days that everyone else does, so while they`re paying bills PDQ, their customers where not paying them, instead the customers where using the 30,60,90 days
this left Pawsons with a temp cash shortfall, causing problems with obtaining fuel etc both at the yard and on the fuel cards. One driver had to get Richard Pawson to pay up on his own personnel credit card, over the phone so the driver could get back from London. But apparently the cash flow issue is sorted and bussiness is back to normal

So it’s not just me that’s heard this as well.

Ken.

I thought kingspan had got the old somerfield depot at sherburn. Our night trunkers have just started going up there to get it up and running.
Tonyb

It could be that it is a multi user depot,as it is a huge place,as I know only too well.

Ken.

Have just spoken to my brother in law who lives in Sherburn and he tells me its correct about Wincanton moving to the old Somerfield site.Mind you I wouldn’t believe him if he said it was Sunday. He’s always saying things are much better up North. What do you think Chris

  Well Charlie if yer brother-in-law thinks the money’s better up North then he wants seeing to mate, but there again money’s not everything-at least that’s what Wincanton told us at Maltby when they bought Glass Glover out.
Anyway I’m a tax exile living in t’Isle of Man now so it makes no odds to me but there’s worse places to live and work.If you can put up with wind and rain and yer missus can get used to fetching her washing back from places like Carlisle and Dumfries when she leaves it out to dry in the wind then there’s no problem with the IOM and do you know, they don’t use tachographs over here so I’ve been told as the island is not part of the UK or in the EEC.

Mind you, drivers here don’t get any nights out. so no dodgys.
So you see,in some respects things can be better up North - even in t’middle of t’Irish Sea. If you ever come over I’ll buy you a pint which will be about the same price as London prices. :open_mouth:

Going back to Wincanton, you can bet your life they’ll have summat else lined up for Maltby. It will probably close for a refurbishment and re-open for another contract they’ve pinched at a lower rate and offer the usual pittance to drivers and warehouse staff.I shall get to know as I keep in touch with various people there.
Keep t’ t’ left.

I`m sure i posted those words on another thread last week :unamused:

Its a real shame. They were my favourite agency job, blokes ok, office staff ok kit ok.
I was talking to a driver last week and he said they’d got a new contract with McDonalds. Might be too little too late.
C

seems a shame, its one of the companies I always notice and have met some good lads while doing the Cadbury work. Hope Pawsons pull through

spoke to one of their drivers in our yard to day,and he did not seem to concerned about all the talk of packing up.i have noticed though that his newer motors are plain white with sign writeing instead of the normal full burgundy paint job.he seems to be doing a lot more work for us than he used to do.

Spotted on the M62 westbound, this morning, about 8am,near the Little House on the Praire:

Ken.

The white ones used to be saved for the agency chaps usually!
