PAUL GEE's PHOTO COLLECTION (Part 1)

Hello Dean, you asked who’s Atkinson this was…well I can tell you who it used to belong to…Ron Dunne from Swindon,I asked my pal Adrian Cypher who photographed most of his lorries and he tells me that this Atki was a second hand acquisition and he only saw it when Ron Dunne took over part of the old Vickers site in Swindon and only behind locked gates therefore being one that got away…the giveaway is the fact that on all of his motors he wrote “delivered on time” across the front of the lorry somewhere and if you look real close you can see it scrawled across the top of the radiator…sorry to waffle on,Cheers Bubbs,

God help me !!! for one dreadfull moment I thought there was another model Atkinson, the “Acquisition”, heading for a dark room now. Harvey

Hello DEAN …great shots as usual …love the Sam Bowkett S40 Foden …they bought a couple of those from Eric Ward Monmouth …also the FWT Ross …Fred Williams Transport S39 Foden also based in Monmouth .
Maybe Paul has some Eric Ward shots …remember them at Alcan Rogerstone …and Alcoa Gowerton …great stuff from S Wales DEAN …Geraint .

Smallcoal, my Dad is Ken Mills (I’m Keith) - he was only at Oakley’s for a short while, so perhaps not long enough for anything untoward to happen - but he describes the Oakley’s as ‘colourful charachters’. He reeled off various ‘interesting’ stories, as much to do with their personal lives as the transport. It’s a shame that my dad wont use the computer and doesn’t have a phone, so he never visits TNUK - and I live in Aus, but I’m visiting the mother country at the moment, so I’m able to ask him about the past.
Cheers Keith

Thanks Keith “colourful charachters”

I think the Guy Big J transporter might have been one of Lathams or one of their old ones. It looks like the right color and I know they had them. Great pictures today, thanks.

The Car Transporter is one of Cartransport (BRS) from Coventry, they had a number of them on S,T plates, your right about the colour though, after the take over of Lathams, they all got painted that colour Blue. Cliff

Thanks for your input Cliff !

Love the Woodside Brothers F86.

My late step father worked for Woodsides for over 30 years, can’t make out if its him.

Thought i was the only person with any Woodsides pictures, I’ve put a few on Trucknet…

My day has been made, a very happy chappy

You should know by now “Tankerian” you never know what Paul took photos off ! Bearing in mind he still
has an awful lot of photos to catalogue who knows what will turn up !

Used to remember when with my dad always saying about the difference of placing those big one off coils just a foot out of place ,how different the ride was literally bouncing up the road with the unit nodding all the way or if it was sat in the sweet spot it was completely different.
This was with Sandersons Atkinson Borderer 180 Gardner and either 33ft or 40 ft coil carriers Boden and Yorks mostly. Those coils out of Llanwern etc were usually around 15 to 16 ton a big lump sat on those trailers, got a slightly better ride with 2 smaller ones but even if those were not quite sat right you noticed the rougher ride.
I still loved every minute of it, and thanks once again Dean Paul and Mark for these photo’s and memories they bring back.

The coils on them are about 18 ton the back of the coil should be in front of the first axle that balancing the load equally between tractor and trailer like the one in the pic cheers John

John, i suppose if its the first time you have loaded a coil you could get it wrong ■■ :unamused: However you would
no doubt learn from your mistake and not do it again as i bet the unit was a bit light on the front end.
Out of intrest when you loaded them out of steel works did the crane driver not position it in the
correct place on the trailer or did he take direction from the driver ■■

The two shots of the Woodside motors, the F86 and the Sed/Atk clearly show how the Irishmen created a “bomb proof” 40 ft 8x8 van, simply by taking a 40ft ISO box and sticking a tandem bogie and a set of landing legs under it ! They gave up sheeting and roping as a bad job in the early 70’s and converted to the ISO box, nothing too big or too heavy as long as they could “stuff it” into a “van” !! Cheers Bewick.

Hi dean, when you load in the steelworks you weigh in get a tare note with your tare unit number and trailer number and destination and what bay you loading from ,small print on bottom of note states ,it is the drivers responsible to ensure the trailer is loaded correctly so the crane driver takes instructions from the driver cheers John
