The time has come, !! could you educate me on the models please, ie Borderer, black knight, Silver whatever as although I remember the trucks I never knew the model line up.
Thanks in advance… Harvey

The best i can do is this…
The name ‘Borderer’ was dreamed up in May 1970 by the late Frank Whalley who was the publicity manager for Atkinson Vehicles.
It was one of six names used by the company to identify the different models being built at the time.
The range consisted of tractor units ‘Borderer’ (4x2) and ‘Venturer’ (6x4),
Two-axle chassis ‘Raider’.
Three-axle chassis ‘Searcher’
Four-axle chassis ‘Defender’.
The new model for this generation at the time being the twin steer tractor unit ‘Leader’ (6x2).

Anything earlier and Chris Gardner is the man to put you right.

Almost… I’ve written it somewhere else, so I will try to find it and then paste it in, because I’m lazy. No, actually, busy! :sunglasses:

Leader wasn’t wholly new, though, as it was a full re-work of the earlier ‘Rear Steer’ tractors, designed for 38 tons rather than the 32 of the earlier version

The ‘Raider’ name was never actually used in period, as far as I can ascertain, although it was certainly the intended name for the 2-axle rigid. The new range was unveiled at the Earls Court Commercial Motor Show in October 1970

Thank you M M L & 240 Gardiner, so the white knight etc depicts the model of the cabs involved, we called the twin steer 6x2 tractors, a chinese six.
It must have been nice to have a name for each model, Thanks again. I will now go and check I have the right number for the Samaritons. Harvey

1Storey Bros were from Monton Eccles and were the main contractor for Taylor Bros & Co Ltd who had a huge train wheel manufacturing works at Trafford Park Manchester which closed in 1999.

0This James Wilkinson Foden DG 6 wheeler, powered by a Gardner 6LW engine, is seen here with complete wheels and axles from Taylor Bros & Co Ltd in Trafford Park which was in fact a sub-contracted load from Storey Bros.

The guy on the left of the picture is George Bradburn senior, while on the right is a young Austin Wilkinson driving one of his dads four Foden’s.
The picture was taken in 1946 /47 prior to British Transport nationalisation when it cost just 3 shillings (15p) for the diesel to go to Derby and back.

A video showing the manufacturing of the last railway wagon wheel manufactured in 1999 at Taylor Brothers can be seen HERE

Good stuff Paul, thanks for posting, looks like the Foden has got a fair bit of weight on there !

Don’t bother Harvey, it’s permanently engaged. Must be all the TNUK members who read Carryfasts posts?

Pete.

The above B series looks rather like Applebys Wolverhampton ?

Harvey, prior to the Mk11 receiving Frank Whalley’s names at the beginning of the seventies, the chassis were designated as either Silver Knight, Black Knight or Gold Knight depending on the intended function. Chris knows the associations for each - I’ve forgotten them although they’re in a book somewhere but I can’t remember where I left it…

Morning dean ,the Oakley marathon consisted of 3 brothers Trevor,Arthur, roger,Trevor started rotherwas transport pulling out of metal box and bsc p talbot ,Trevor and roger are in jail last I heard stealing plant equipment only Arthur is still in bisiness they from Hereford, I drove for Trevor he put the firm in liquidation and done a runner we had to chase the liquidators for wages holiday pay and all expenses cheers John ,

I think the Guy Big J transporter might have been one of Lathams or one of their old ones. It looks like the right color and I know they had them. Great pictures today, thanks.

"Oily may be able to confirm he knows his car transporters " I’d give way to dieseldog66 and transporterman on that one Dean, though not sure if transporterman looks in on this thread. Still keeping an eye open for Progressive transporters

Smallcoal, my Dad recalls that Arthur was father to Trevor and Roger, and that he passed away many years ago. My Dad drove for Trevor in around 1970 for a short while, he drove an ERF reg OVJ 888 G, 180 Gardner & 5 spd Splitter box. The ERF was bought by Graham Roberts , of Ross Roadways / Roberts Transport.

Hi k mills Arthur still got his name on the trucks I was in there last year and one of the staff told me go see Arthur where the pallet was to go I will check to see did Trevor treat him alright cause we never saw him till he wrapped up cheers John ,who was you father

Smallcoal, my Dad is Ken Mills (I’m Keith) - he was only at Oakley’s for a short while, so perhaps not long enough for anything untoward to happen - but he describes the Oakley’s as ‘colourful charachters’. He reeled off various ‘interesting’ stories, as much to do with their personal lives as the transport. It’s a shame that my dad wont use the computer and doesn’t have a phone, so he never visits TNUK - and I live in Aus, but I’m visiting the mother country at the moment, so I’m able to ask him about the past.
Cheers Keith

Hello Dean, you asked who’s Atkinson this was…well I can tell you who it used to belong to…Ron Dunne from Swindon,I asked my pal Adrian Cypher who photographed most of his lorries and he tells me that this Atki was a second hand acquisition and he only saw it when Ron Dunne took over part of the old Vickers site in Swindon and only behind locked gates therefore being one that got away…the giveaway is the fact that on all of his motors he wrote “delivered on time” across the front of the lorry somewhere and if you look real close you can see it scrawled across the top of the radiator…sorry to waffle on,Cheers Bubbs,

The Car Transporter is one of Cartransport (BRS) from Coventry, they had a number of them on S,T plates, your right about the colour though, after the take over of Lathams, they all got painted that colour Blue. Cliff

Love the Woodside Brothers F86.

My late step father worked for Woodsides for over 30 years, can’t make out if its him.

Thought i was the only person with any Woodsides pictures, I’ve put a few on Trucknet…

My day has been made, a very happy chappy
