D & A Transport of Longton Lancashire aka Doris and Albert.
Albert Rayton originally set up the business on his own and it was called Rayton’s.
After a while Albert had a run in with the ministry so it was renamed ‘D & A Transport’.
Doris was his wife’s name and he was called Albert, hence it became known as Doris and Albert.

This was an operator that passed me by for many years, and I see that he has acquired a pair of previously restored Atkis and painted them in his livery - I think they look well, and nice to see that he actually operated them in the day.

Cheers “240Gardner” they certainly look better than these two !!
The John Raymond Atkinson P-reg 240 Gardner looks like it has the later air filter set up
as was fitted to the lhd 400 sed/atk , the name of the filter set up
just strange as never seen this set up on any other Borderer or Venturer.

That looks like a load of ICI fertilizer in the blue bags. They had places at Heysham, Avonmouth and Billingham. It does look like a rushed tarp job; but in all fairness, you were given little time to rope and sheet at Billingham . Bartrums had a “No bags showing” rule but after hauling so much of the stuff, you soon knew the most economical way to lay the sheets out.
Yay. A lorry that I’ve driven on this thread at last.

The foden pic with the sheeted trailer, all Welsh firms sheeted empty trailers as bsc would only load dry trailers that’s why the sheet was put over cheers John
RTD not one of mine for sure too rough round the edges and we always had white bumpers with four square spotlights under in a frame but may have been one of Harry Philips as he bought one of our olduns and then adopted the colour scheme when we went to white factory cabs with vinyl stickies & blue factory painted chassis’s, Buzzer.

A few odds and sods.2
The Smith Bros motor is Smith’s from Tamworth, and it’s an early Mk.2 ‘Silver Knight Rear Steer’, for running at 32T with a tandem-axle trailer, as one was supposed to in those far-off days, unless you could meet an almost impossible outer axle measurement on 4 axles

Brian, with that short trailer it’s more likely the Foden was going to load tinplate. You definitely had to have a dry floor for that.
