A joint motorway going into port talbot with a empty sheeted trailer
I forgot all about having to sheet the trailer floor before going into BSC works.
I could never see the point in it tbh.
It was the same at Gartcosh (although not so up the road from there at Ravenscraig, even though they made the same coils)
Ok, I realise it was because they wanted a dry trailer going in, but we used to sheet up a soaking wet trailer many times, just to get through the gates, but nothing was said when you backed in to load your coils.
After saying that, many a time you sat at Gartcosh 8 hours to load
so by that time the trailer had dried out anyway.
Thanks “robroy” for your comments !

In the early days Hoyer operated grey trucks very similar to Norman Lewis, but I do recall a Hoyer subbie Ray Appleyard running a lone Scania

2D & A Transport of Longton Lancashire aka Doris and Albert.
Albert Rayton originally set up the business on his own and it was called Rayton’s.
After a while Albert had a run in with the ministry so it was renamed ‘D & A Transport’.
Doris was his wife’s name and he was called Albert, hence it became known as Doris and Albert.

This was an operator that passed me by for many years, and I see that he has acquired a pair of previously restored Atkis and painted them in his livery - I think they look well, and nice to see that he actually operated them in the day.

Hi Dean,
What a cracking looking truck, well ballanced and a great headboard sign, bet that would look fantastic in colour.
Thanks for what you two do to put this site to-gether and the work you put in. Harvey

Hi robroy,in port talbot we used to shunt the trailers in for loading there was the cold rolled,Galv line, then the hot mill, the reason cold rolled coils and Galv coils were sheeted was to stop claims for damaged coils, that’s why coil wells were rubber lined and beds had to be dry,you could load hot rolled on wet trailers they didn’t have to be sheeted either,I spent 30 years on steel shunting then out on the road some sheeted pics of coils loaded by shunters for the road drivers ,the guy on the weighbridge is a shunt unit cheers John ps thanks to cc for the weighbridge pic
Great pics again John !

VALKYRIE
Thank you VALKYRIE, I was right, it does look great, I think to offten these days manufacturers go for pay load only due to time etc but in the good old days it also had to look good, in my book that Foden did.
Cheers again, Harvey
I agree Harvey thats what i like about this period of transport ,the trucks look individual rather than all
the sameplus i think the company colours and sign writing are great on some of them.
