paulgeeriding1 posted.jpgSeddon Atkinson 400 Series 4x2 tractor unit Reg No URN 420R Fleet No 10 ‘Triumphant’ was registered new to W & J Riding on the 1st August 1976 at a cost of £12,606.55p.
Powered by a Gardner 240 eight cylinder engine in line with an eight speed David Brown gearbox and the usual Kirkstall double reduction rear axle, another £2,500 was spent fitting it out with blowing equipment before it entered service with the tanker fleet.

Dean, so many pictures of F88s, fabulous making me all nostalgic, just hoping for the right F88 to pop up.
Again thanks so much to all of you for sharing these wonderful photos.
Cheers Norman.

Stupot. correct on the F88, M reg so 240,it also looks like its had new tubless front wheels. But then I could be miles out.
Cheers Norman.

Regarding the K.F.H. picture, it is definitely Kirkby Fleetham Haulage as owned by John Kettlewell, and grand bloke who I have known for quite a number of years. Kettlewell Transport is a different company from , I think, Melmerby Near Ripon, with a very similar livery.

Unless it changed its name once it went world wide I’ve always known it as Thomas National Transport or unless the signwriter on this Comet combination got it wrong!

Hi Franky Im sure you are right on this one, Although a lot of people thought it was explosives    , Regards Larry.

Started by Ken Thomas in Australia in 1946, owner driver, rapid expansion as Thomas National Transport, name changed in May 1958 to Thomas Nationwide Transport, but more usually known by its initials TNT.

From what I’ve read, it was initially Thomas National Transport, but Australia being a nation that promotes free enterprise people thought the initial name sounded too much like a government owned operation, so it was change to what we all recognise Thomas Nationwide Transport, which is now TNT , Incidentally i knew a guy by the name of Bill Ridings from Sale ,he went over to Australia just after the war and he got a driving job with Thomas Transport with an old bow front Atki double drive coupled to a single axle box van hauling biscuits.

London Carriers.
1London Carriers originally started as general haulage company but after winning a large contract with the Dutch company Phillips electronics.
Phillips later took over London Carriers after which time they became part of the Phillips Group.
When Phillips decided to change to the grey and blue livery Phillips logo appeared on the side of their vehicles.
Along with many other depots nationwide they had a large depot at Heywood near Manchester their livery was originally all green as seen here in this picture below…

Hi ,DENNIS , COULD IT HAVE BEEN JOHN SUTTCLIFF ? CHeers Barry

No Baz, John Sutcliffe was one of the actual Makin Family and he carried on for a bit as a Director after Bibbys took over, I’m not just sure but I believe his mother was a Makin. Ah! just got it Baz John Thorpe !!! see it just came to me while answering your post mate ! Thanks for the help though Baz, did you run into Disley much ? Now another question what did they call the little two motor firm that ran out of Disley ? The bloke that ran them got a job in the Mill after we took over. I’ve got to say we got on very well with both “Johns” once they accepted we were well up to the “Job” and I realise not everyone was over pleased when we turned up at each Mill but it was a case of Bibbys saying " You are taking over all the transport Dennis at Makins, including their own motors" ! Cheers Mr. Bewick.

Tanks for your comments Dennis !

What did your Old man say to you Baz ? " You should have been a bit quicker to jump out of the way our Barry" The firm I am talking about Baz ran an F 86 artic and it was painted mainly a cream colour with maroon edges. Cheers Mr. Bewick.

Did Pandoro not have a firm vehicle buying policy Chris i.e. stick mainly to one Marque or was it just a case of going out to tender for X number of units of a similar spec at any given time ? Cheers Dennis.
