Hi Dean
Interesting article about livestock transport, my Dad was on the RHA National Livestock Committee back in the day.

Nice to see Mr Garood in the article. They built livestock bodies under the name of Newark Containers, interesting to read he expected a lifespan of 15 years on average for a container. We had two, the first one was bought brand new in 1970 and over the years was on a Super Comet, two Clydesdales and eventually a Freighter. it was being used by a Northumberland farmer in 2010 and still had the original door. floor, deck bars and rear gates.

Tyneside

  You cant knock that Tyneside 40 years old and still being used ! That was a cheap body if you divided it by 40 !

What was the name of your dads company ?

There you go Dean quick potted history, first two photos taken early 80’s is my late Father (with the hat) and my good self.

The dog was Sam. My Dad got him more or less full grown, he had gone through the full police training but they had failed him at the last test, said he was bit too nervous but he remembered everything he had been taught and could lick you to death if you let him !!

Ray Smyth:
Further to my “Ray Moore” comments above, as a young man, Ray wanted to be an actor, so he joined
Oldham Repertory Theatre Company in the 1960s. Soon after he got some work with Granada Television
in Manchester, mainly doing voiceover links, and occasionally reading the local evening news in front of
camera. I believe that some people higher up in the television world considered that his appearance on
screen was not what was required, but he looked good on Radio. I thought he looked alright.
Despite being from Liverpool, it wasn’t apparent in his voice that he was a Scouser. Sometimes Ray would
recite silly rhymes from when he was a lad, at which time he would slip into a Liverpool accent.

For example…Me father ad a rabbit and he thought it was a duck,
So he put it on the table with its legs cocked up.

Go bless us and save us…said old Mrs Davis,
I didn’t know herrings were fish.

Regards, Ray Smyth.

Nice one Ray, just got to this, as it’s a long process catching up! I read his autobiography, funny and moving. Class act.

One of my heroes, from the days when Radio 2 was about the only thing that kept me sane! Or reasonably so.

Hiya Dean,
Well you always said you would find a “Bewick” one day so full marks to you Mate. I think I can make out the reg as H 238 THG and it was part of a quite “hairy” deal I concluded at Haydock Commercials in early ‘91. That unit was one of a batch of 8 late 90’ R113’s and they had been returned to the Dealer as the firm ( Brown coloured from around Wigan but the name escapes me ATM !) had ceased trading but the Scania Dealer had underwritten the initial finance so they were now round their necks ! I can recall this deal like it was yesterday as I was looking for about 20 units to cover the contract we had recently taken on at East Lancashire Paper Mill in Radcliffe. Well I got wind of these 113’s and shot into Haydock to see if I could buy them, well the price kicked off at £225K and I bid him £175 for starters! The Boss man I was dealing with was in a very highly charged state to say the least and he desperately wanted shot of these units as at the time the UK was in a serious recession . Anyway to cut the story short I dealt at £185 K for the 8 but there was a strict requirement attached, he had to have the brass in his account by the following day preferably by noon if at all possible. So I stuck my neck out and shook his sweaty hand ! As I left Haydock I was straight on the phone to our Accountant who at first refused to believe me that I had actually dealt for all 8 units for the price ! So after some very serious financial calculations and arm twisting at Nat West the £185K plus VAT was wired to Haydock the following day and I was never sure if the Bloke at Haydock was pleased or despondent as I reckoned they would have had to make up the difference between what I paid and what the outstanding finance would have been but as I remember the industry was suffering badly at that time so it would have been “a bird in the hand” sort of decision. At the same time I also picked up another batch of 8 ( IIRC ) of immaculate P113’s from Foleys in Kidderminster who had recently been bought out by Cowies of Sunderland and they were selling off most of the Foley hire fleet. Some of these P cabs had only done 8 or 9,000 miles and the highest mileage was only into the 20,000 ths ! Interesting but Happy days ! Cheers Dennis.

Pete.

There was never any agency Drivers at Bewick Transport when I was running the show we always had a list of Lads looking to join us over the years. I believe that after WRM took over they were forced to use Agency because they could never fill the vacancies and many of their regular drivers were of the quality we would never have entertained at Bewick Transport, but hey that was supposed to be progress !! Cheers Dennis.

As this “pointy shoe” crack is after my time Dan’l am I right in thinking you mean some of the sights you see up and down of Blue suits or similar colour and long brown or tan shoes like ■■■■■■■ skis ! :frowning: :open_mouth:     Cheers Denzil PS Very sorry Dan’l if I have insulted your Saturday night “going out” gear !

Never mind having a go at poor Dan, when are we going to see this ‘supertruck’ that you have promised us Dennis? Your engine is taking some sorting though, about 19 pages I think so far and no real progress! I blame Ramone, Anorak, Donald Stokes, Michael Edwardes and Gingerfold because they keep interfering with your chief engineers plans, just tell him to hurry up as we can’t wait much longer and the cameras are loaded and poised! :unamused:

Actually Pete I have sent the Great man to Hong Kong to try and buy a recon 8LXB out of a Junk but the last time I heard from him he had been slung into the dock for trying to explain to the chinks where they were going wrong with their choice of engine ! Cheers Dennis.

I have a job in the pipeline to move a foden S something 20/21 ? Heavy haulage winch tractor unit it’s got a very early 8 cylinder Gardner but I need to work out the weight .

There’s not that many hauliers that could move it as it’s a none runner and the brakes are on ,there is 6 plus tonnes of winch and balance weight to be craned on and the foden will need getting off at the other end too I’d say I’ve got the market cornered

Don’t give too much away Dan,Bewick 2 might be interested in shifting it!

David

If it has an eight potter in it then most likely it’s a crew cabbed S18 or S20, might be better to get the brakes working on it and use it to tow your Foden about Dan? Or, thinking outside of the box, it could even form the nucleus of the new ‘Bewick Supertruck’ (he could even put a ‘Big A’ badge on the grille so folk wont think he has finally gone upmarket !) as it would easily drag around pretty much any weight he is likely to want shifting? :bulb: Maybe I could even have a late career as a transport planner after all?

Pete.
