Furthest for me was Measham to Lount via Ashby about 4/5 ml but I’m led to believe that you could drive them as far as you like, would make an interesting shopping run about. Top speed around 35 but you wouldn’t want to do it on the road let alone on site, once you get to 20mph the ride gets so bad that you start to lose your vision and despite being strapped in you’re hanging on for dear life!! The Cat let you know she was working,Terex with the 2strokes was out of this world, only had a month on one followed by 30 odd years of tinnitus. Having said all that they were definitely the toys for the boys cheers Coomsey

I may have already posted this elsewhere on here but can’t remember! Anyway one of our vintage club members worked for Shand Construction from Rowsley, between Matlock and Bakewell, back in the sixties. A couple of other lads and him were told to collect three Euclid scrapers from a coal site in Durham and drive them down to St Albans to work on the new M10 St Albans bypass, now part of the M25. None of them had driven scrapers before. They set off down the old A1 from Durham and reached the first roundabout, they hadn’t realised that when you closed the throttle they wouldn’t steer and all three went straight over the island and then spotted that the scraper buckets were full of grass and plants from the island!
Anyway they carried on and all was well until they reached Stamford, which wasn’t bypassed in those days of course. They collected a Police ■■■■■■ but struggled through the narrow streets because of parked vehicles. There was an old Austin 10 parked outside a shop so the copper went in and asked the driver to move it but he refused until he had finished shopping. So the copper said ‘carry on lads’ and three scrapers went straight over the top of the little Austin! They never heard anything about it!

I thought as much “coomsey”, that you would have driven it fairly local. I was guessing 40mph having never driven one and imagined it would be
screaming is head off so 35 sounds spot on. That made me laugh “20mph the ride gets so bad that you start to lose your vision”
I can imagine them being bloody noisey old things and uncomfortable.
I finally found the clipping i was talking about,it was still in the magazine and i had not scanned it !
Anyway i reckon these boys should have got a medal “coomsey” ,drove them for 700 miles !!!
They probably hold the world record for driving scrapers that far !

Hi Dean,
The Gardners would have been 180’s in Foden S80’s, I’m presuming the ■■■■■■■ would have been L10’s? This was early 1980’s, it was a hard road from off the Peak’s in to the Black Country, still is in my opinion!
