Hi Dean.
GKN is Guest Keen and Nettlefold in old money, they have factories all over the UK and abroad and they had a steelworks in Cardiff called Eastmoors. They manufacture aerospace equip nowadays but they were best known for nuts and bolts when I were a lad and also for making clutches in Sheffield after taking over Laycock Engineering there. Also crankshafts after taking over Ambrose Shardlow Sheffield. In the 70s I used to see GKN Heath Street Division wagons running between South Wales and Birmingham. They also made the tilt cabs for AEC at GKN Sankey Wellington Salop. If you Google GKN you will see how big they are.As for the MAN Avia 8-legger,sorry but I donāt know much about that company except that itās French owned I believe and a big player in Europe,as I have seen their stations when abroad.
Hi Dean,
As Chris has said above GKN was a massive concern and I think their HQ was originally in Cranford Street Smethwick, hence the Bearwood reg number on the Sed Ak.
Slightly off topic, Archie Nettlefold bought his own island, Burgh Island near Plymouth and built an art deco hotel, Noel Coward, Agatha Christie, Lord Mountbatten and The Beatles all stayed there. Chris Webb probably has also stayed whilst on a dodgy!

Yes Chris,
Cranford street ran in to Heath Street, the big offices at the end of Cranford street have now been demolished and the works past the canal bridge on Heath Street have all been turned in to small ind units, looks a right den of iniquity!

Hi Dean,
Vanguard were taken over by Pickfords in the 90s. ā¦the heavy haulage and machinery side was amalgamated with Pickfords Heavy Haulageā¦and the industrial and commercial moving side was amalgamated with Pickfords Office and Commercial moving.
But I think they are no moreā¦I worked with a lot of the boys from the office and commercial side in the 90s out of Bristol some tidy lads.
Regards Mark

Burgh Island was shown on the last programme where Peter Davison (Dr Who) and Christopher Timothy (James Herriot) drive around Britain in a nice Morgan, good programme (still showing) meeting people with motoring interests including Lorries and travelling on many old routes. Franky.
