Killingbeck Atkinsons.3
This photo is one of a series of photos taken by the late Mike Deuchars of Edinburgh, arch Atkinson enthusiast and hugely knowledgeable in the subject.
Depicting the letter A, the 7 motors shown are John Killingbeck’s six 38T 6x4 tractors, with the 32T 6x2 unit in the middle.
I know you’re expecting some detail so…
Superb. When the text is as good as the pictures, this forum is as good as any of the comics.
It did it twice, for some reason.

I say, steady on old chap…
Although I should clarify and say that he had several more 6x4 tractors - it was six 6x4 Atkinson tractors that he ran at 38 tonnes. He also built some 400 Series into 6x4 and 6x2 form for 38T operation, not to mention a pair of Chinese 6 ERF B series tractors

Good photo of the Douglas Brass Foden, they traded from Yafforth just outside of Northallerton in North Yorkshire. In later years they ran Scanias, they ceased trading in 2013 according to companies house.

BRS Cartransport Ltd…not sure what depot it’s from though. The first job I ever had, working in the yard, at Queenborough Isle of Sheppey. Good times.
Here’s one of the Mercedes 1626’s from the Sheerness depot where I worked…they all had the same stripe over the cab, just a different colour. Each depot also seemed to have a different make of truck too depending what contract they were on.
DEANB:
P&O Guy. Dont remember seeing P&O trucks pulling bulkers ■■
I wonder if it had been sold and was being used as a shunter by someone else? It doesn’t seem to have VED or O Licence discs in the screen. N/s mirror is missing too
Rear trailer wheels are also missing.
Morning dean,a couple of cullimores in Gloucester yard Friday
Chris Webb:
Nice photo of an MFS Scania 81 with 24ft trailer,on the Littlewoods contract.I think the photo of the Transcontinental is one of Bubbleman’s,hope he doesn’t mind me using it. The Ford,BWB 514T was the first of six we had and this one, fleet 153,was based at Ross depot, and is seen in another life as a potato merchant’s wagon and drag after it went in 1981/2.
Thanks for the infoChris and a cracking pic of the Transcon.

Ironic really that a company from Preston were Atkinson lorries were built should also be called Atkinson.
R Atkinson was part of a number of other companys which included Atkinson Trailer Hire, Longton Haulage and Ainsworth & Martin.
Each company seemed to be owned by different combinations of the directors of R Atkinson but working from different phones in the same premises.
Chris Gardner no doubt can fill in the gaps.Got round to this in the end… in fact, Paul, the bit about the ownership looks likely something I’ve already written somewhere!
In fact, Alan Atkinson (I think, one of the sons of R Atkinson) had actually trained as an engineer with Atkinson Vehicles Limited.
As the various businesses separated, he ran the trailer hire business, still very much thriving today:
He also has some older machinery:
And finally this, not a Borderer, but a very early Mk. 2 Silver Knight, new to William Nuttall of Clifton Junction, and now fitted with a later cab:
It previously operated on the R Atkinson fleet, seen here in the 1985 line-up at the old factory:
Another excellent effort Chris, thanks for the info and pics. They have got some serious money ■■■■■■■ with the old steam roller and lorry.

Dean I would put a five pound bet that the Merc is one of Morrie Macness’s, he ran quite a few Mercs on traction back in the day out of Southampton and those colours and the way it is painted makes me believe it to be one of his, there were a lot of OD’s and men with a few motors doing such work back then and it was common not to have a name on as most were running on someone else’s permits buts that’s how it was back then, Buzzer
