Morning Dean,
The black ERF is Haywards from Walsall and they also have a depot at Pocklington York,
The Scania is Round Oak motors from Brierley Hill
Volvo FH is John Brindley from Lutterworth, I think that area anyway! Is that a winch on the front bumper?
Top pics as usual from Paul and thanks again for taking time posting them Dean, Pete
Thanks for your comments about those 3 motors Pete !
Looks like a winch to me chap !
Me.Paul.101:

I’ve asked this before but forgotten the answer , why did rigid 86’s have four headlights when the tractor units had two?
Thanks & Regards
Spud
Dont know “Spud1960”.
Maybe Harvey will know ■■?
Morning “Spud1960”, sorry, dont know the proper answer to that.
If I had to take a guess I would say that as the 8x4 was built in Scotland they probably had more of a free hand to add things and as lights were never a strong point on the 86 they put it in the new model as an update. The grill and lights would fit other configurations as an after sale but quite expensive. Harvey

Thanks for the comments Harvey, sounds like an upgrade to me.

Interesting company Dean,
They ran ouf of a yard on the Salisbury road Blandford Forum, For many years ran Mandators in a big way and when the son took over changed to Daf and as he put it to me one day ( saved the company).
Reconed the AEC nearly closed him down, Of course if he had gone for Volvo instead of Daf he would still be in business to-day ha !! nice chap though. Harvey
PS: Think the demise was more to do with Tach’os etc than the trucks.
The yard is still there Harvey but i dont know if anyone is running trucks from there now.
grumpy old man:
Old Foden.
A couple of old Fodens.
Look at the starting handle on the old 4 wheel Fodens.
Swinging a Gardner to start it is not a one man job.

Ray Smyth:
Anyone recognise the ERF ■■
Hi Dean, I don’t recognise the white ERF, but the blue DAF behind it, with the “Heinz” curtainsided trailer looks like
a Wincanton outfit on its way to or from a Heinz factory at either Harlesden,London NW10, or Kitt Green, Wigan.
The Harlesden factory closed some years ago. I cant tell the date of the picture.
Regards, Ray.
Thanks for the input Ray.
Chris Webb:
I remember backloading off Round Oak Motor Services late 60s,when they were in Dudley,is that the same company Pete? I think they were on Pear Tree Lane, not sure, ran some Scania 110s IIRC. They usually sent me to Walter Somers Halesowen for die blocks or a mining machinery place in Stourbridge.
There was no weighbridge at Somers and they sent me in for an “allegedly” 12 ton rejected lump to go back to Samuel Foxes Stocksbridge (BSC). I had a LAD Reiver and it was a rayt struggle up that hill, was it Gorstey Hill Road back to Oldbury ? No wonder it were hard work, when I weighed in at Foxes weighman shouted “tha wants another axle on that”.
It weighed 15 and half ton.

Thanks for the pic and story Chris !

I’ve asked this before but forgotten the answer , why did rigid 86’s have four headlights when the tractor units had two?
Thanks & Regards Spud
I have the dimmest of recollections that the different ride height of the cab on the 8x4 chassis meant that the original headlamp position did not meet the regulations - I may or may not have remembered that correctly
I think we will have to look into this a bit more Chris but your explanation could also be right.
moomooland:
A rare beast a Volvo F86 four wheeler with twin headlights.
Thinking about it i think Chris may be right as i dont remember seeing a twin headlight artic ?
smallcoal:
