Best selling 32tonner in 1972, hmmm, that was around the time the foreign invasion really took off and the start of when the industrial relation problems caused supply problems in the British manufacturing industry. So I’m going to say the Volvo F86.

Yes,AEC Mandator for me as well.

Your right in what your saying Mark, though I think? Maybe a bit before the Swedish ■■■■■■■■■■?BRS alone had huge numbers of Mandator’s back then…
Regards Andrew.

Andrew, Big J, Mandator or F86 were my choices, I’ll be shocked if it isn’t one of those three, but the Irvine plant came into being in that era, so that meant Volvo were selling enough to warrant a plant here to keep up with demand, that’s what I based my guess on.

If we are looking at 72 K/L reg probably the Atkinson Borderer, although the shortage of Gardner engines may of had an impact at that time!
The Mandator is a good choice though.

Saturday night here in sunny Florida. Just realised something special, thanks to TNUK, I have personally met the previous two posters.
My fellow Welshman and very well respected Andrew Cooper (pete359), and equally respected pal, Mark Lee(newmercman).
As ex pats, I’m sure Mark will agree, even though we live in three different countries this site keeps us in touch with everyone.
Thanks to everyone who posts, looking in is an adventure every day.

You are spot on there Paul, I often “talk” to Andrew on Facebook, a social media ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ lol.

Chris Webb:
Morning Dean.
I don’t know much about Cargill Albion as they were foodstuffs manufacturers, but I think it was a tie up between the old Albion Sugar company and Cargills.I believe Cargills have a big site in Trafford Park and it was the former Corn Products company.I would say that the ERF is one of Tankfreights on contract, having that Leeds/West Yorks reg plate.

As far as the leading 32 tonner question is concerned I’d go for the AEC Mandator……………

Thanks for the information Chris !

I think that the Tilcon Haulmaster was from either Ballidon or Kevin quarries as it has the loading lamp on the cab roof that we fitted to them all in our workshop? A pity we don’t know where the pic was taken. Driver could well be Alan Astley (‘China Chicken’ on the CB) who lived at Tean, Staffs, and was based at Kevin quarry, he later became an OD when the fleet were being sold off and actually bought the Foden that I used to drive, C433 LHE.

I’m still waiting for a pic of one of my trucks to appear…I could be waiting a long while
Pete.

Thanks for the comments Pete. The photo was taken as the truck was heading out of Ferndown towards
Poole/Bournemouth. Pop a pic of one of your trucks on here chap !

Morning “Newmercman”,
When the uk Volvo dealerships yelled to sweden we want a 30 tonner and were told “you have one” in the F86 6x4, they could not understand why we Derated axles, they said ok, we can send you long wheel base 6x4’s and you can stick a second steer axle with drag link on yourselves, that is why Irvine came about.
Old military complex, deal was 2 years free of rates if you only use local labour, the F86 8x4 was born, later came other standard chassis assemblies and of course the Elsa bus. Harvey

Thanks to everyone who answered the question. I only posted it as a bit of fun as i saw an advert.

Some intresting replies, and although i was only a kid i would have definately got it wrong and the
first one that came to mind was the Atkinson Borderer. I thought Bewicks Seddon 32/4 was a good
answer as they semmed to be loads of those around as well. Gingerfold also mentioned the Seddon.

The Mandator must have been a huge seller as it was the choice of Harvey, pete 359,m.a.n. rules,
Chris Webb, and Paul John also mentioned it. Maybe it was the second biggest seller !

240 Gardner,Stanfield and Dieseldog66 all mentioned different Leylands.

Does anyone have a phone number for “coomsey” If they do can they call him and make sure he
is alright !!! I think he may have stopped taking his medication and he may require medical help.
Sorry “coomsey” it was not the Ford D series me old mucker !
(only joking mate ! )

Buzzer mentioned ERF,and i would imagaine that they would have been fairly high up the list, but
not the biggest seller.

Jelliot. Jeff mentioned loads of different makes and in amongst them mentioned the winner but
never gave a specific answer !

However one member was bang on ! “newmercman” was the clear winner with Volvo’s mighty F86 !
