PAUL GEE's PHOTO COLLECTION (Part 1)

Ford D series was only 28 ton… not sure about Bedford either… Probably Atki, ERF, Seddon, Don’t know if Volvo F86 had a big hold in 72… I think Volvo was out selling the Scania 80’'s …Was the question… what was the top selling British 32 ton artic?.. or what was the best seller 32 ton artic in Britton?..

Jeff…

Morning Dean.
I don’t know much about Cargill Albion as they were foodstuffs manufacturers, but I think it was a tie up between the old Albion Sugar company and Cargills.I believe Cargills have a big site in Trafford Park and it was the former Corn Products company.I would say that the ERF is one of Tankfreights on contract, having that Leeds/West Yorks reg plate.

As far as the leading 32 tonner question is concerned I’d go for the AEC Mandator……………

Tommy Ashcroft was a long time Pandoro subby, based in Rufford in West Lancashire. He had a handful of Atkis like this, and I believe he even operated a Bedford KM tractor at one time.

The trailer looks unfamiliar, but the box looks like a Pandoro (ex-Ferrymasters Ireland, I think) ‘bulktainer’, and which would have loaded out of ICI Fibres at Pontypool before purpose-built tanker trailers were bought

Tommy Ashcroft died last year - well into his eighties and was still driving one of his own wagons up until a few months before he died. The business still exists at Rufford, although the last of the liveried wagons (ERF ECs) have now been sold. They now operate a clutch of white unlettered DAFs.

Thanks Marl - sorry to hear that. He was a funny old bloke in some ways, to say the least.

“What was the top selling 32 ton model sold in Britain in 1972 ?”

Make and model please.

I was only 6 in 1972   But i would have definately got this question wrong.

Should be intresting to see the answers and i will pop the answer on Sunday.

Will pop some more stuff on tonight ,off to work.

Something of a trick question, the best selling 32 tonner, maybe unwittingly on your part Dean as you were only 6 at the time! In 1972 I think that was the first year that “foreign” imports actually achieved 10% of sales in the UK. In the artic sector then the medium weights, 20 to 28 tons gross were still selling very well. I know from the research I did for my Gardner book that in the early '70s the total number of Gardner powered 32 tonners, i.e. ERF, Atkinson, Foden, Seddon was approximately the same as all the other 32 tonners combined. I would say, and this is without looking back at any information I might still have, then the top three (not necessarily in the correct order) would have been Seddon 32/4 (It was the cheapest), AEC Mandator, and Guy Big J. And as the dark horse the Leyland Buffalo headless wonder.

I think that the Tilcon Haulmaster was from either Ballidon or Kevin quarries as it has the loading lamp on the cab roof that we fitted to them all in our workshop? A pity we don’t know where the pic was taken. Driver could well be Alan Astley (‘China Chicken’ on the CB) who lived at Tean, Staffs, and was based at Kevin quarry, he later became an OD when the fleet were being sold off and actually bought the Foden that I used to drive, C433 LHE.

I’m still waiting for a pic of one of my trucks to appear…I could be waiting a long while

Pete.

Was it the Leyland Marathon mk1 or did that come out in 73? I know the mk2 came in 1977

Morning Dean,
That was the year I started selling trucks and trade-in’s were mainly Mandators in the 32 ton range, so I will go for the Mandator. Harvey

This does not count the several green & rust, blue & rust, even purple (!) & rust heaps that I owned for short periods of extreme poverty (spouse-instigated!)

I reckon it was in the 1970s when robots were employed (on greatly reduced wages!) to spray bodies. It would have cost around 50% more to apply two colours on each car body. The last two-tone car I had was a 1966 Austin A60 Cambridge, bottom half light grey & off-white upper.

You could get mk5 Cortinas and mk3 Granadas with a two tone silver and blue paint job, so early 80s.
