Soreen was malt loaf and Sunblest Bakery at Littleborough made it. My favourite job on nights at MFS was two loads out of there back to Maltby on a Tuesday afters/night,start about 1600. The night shift manager was called Jack and he used to nip in a WMC at bottom of road for a pint before it shut.I’d park outside and give him a lift up when doing my second run.Happy days and malt loaf to last a lifetime.

Hello DEAN …been catching up ! …that Marathon laden with timber looks like Stan Archer from Llandovery …great stuff as usual …Geraint
Hi DEAN, I keep looking at these great photo’s and thinking just how much we’ve lost in transport, for all the advances there’s been in technology and safety the work still got done and stuff was delivered. It still staggers me at to just how much the likes of Paul Gee and others photographed in the ‘primitive’ days of film camera’s. I often wonder how much didn’t make the grade…Amazing photographs from all who post on here.
I’m probably wrong but the D series Ford may be Joseph Rice from Gloucester, be interested to find out for sure…
That P&O 111 is an Orsett depot lorry, the telltale is the striped bumper, the only P&O group motors that had them were based out of Orsett. They did a lot of Euro work for Anglo Overseas, mostly Italy.

Dean,
There was a link with Humber McVeighs and a freight forwarding company Sutcliffes,I think from the Grimsby area.
When the first tilts were sign written, they were adorned as Sutcliffe Humber International Transport Services, however it didn’t take long for someone to spot that S H I T S wasn’t really an acceptable way of promoting the service!!

0Hi Dean,
Here’s a few of the pictures featured in the McVeigh article you posted above along with a couple more taken in their old yard…4Guy Invincible Reg No XTF 724
3A close up of Leyland Super Comet Reg No PJV 142, seen in the background of the picture above.
2Hull registered Leyland Beaver Reg No VKH 94 along with two LAD cabbed Super Comets.
1Great period yard shot with a rather battered Guy Invincible tractor unit minus one head light and nearside fog light.
Hi MML,
the photos in the article were all taken in McVeigh’s yard on Langley Road Salford,I joined them after Humber and McVeigh joined forces, when they folded I got a start at SoM in Cheetham Hill Manchester, not long after Frank Jackson,“Jacko”,the day foreman also got a start.

BRS .Not sure if Leyland or AEC ■■ Is that 45 gallon drums on the trailer.

It’s an AEC Mercury (the shape of the 40 gallons fuel tank is the giveaway; those tanks were only used on Mercury’s) and its got a 40’ spread axle trailer behind it. I don’t recall BRS having many of those.
Seddon Atkinson 400 Series Reg No PND 251R was new to Ancliffe’s in November 1976.
From the early days Ancliffe were always big Atkinson and Seddon users and carried on with the tradition when
it became Seddon Atkinson, as can be seen in this selection of pictures below…
Another Seddon Atkinson 400 Series was Reg No BNF 824T which was new to Ancliffe in June 1979.

Hello Paul, thanks for your comments Paul and Mark will appreciate them. The main problem that Paul and
Mark has was the “cost” of having the films developed. Paul used to develop his own black and white pics
and pay for the colour ones. But they must have spen thouand’s over te years at Boots ! Can you imagine if
digital cameras had been about back then how many pics we would have.

Seddon Atkinson 400 Series Reg No PND 251R was new to Ancliffe’s in November 1976.
Here’s anther shot of PND 251R heading East on the M62 passing Harsthead Moor in West Yorkshire.
From the early days Ancliffe were always big Atkinson and Seddon users and carried on with the tradition when
it became Seddon Atkinson, as can be seen in this selection of pictures below…
Taken in Ancliff’s depot in Urmston you can see the M63 motorway in the background which today is the M60.
A couple of their old Atki’s parked up at Urmston complete with winter heating panels.
Seddon Atkinson 400 Series Reg No VBU 454S was new to Ancliffe in December 1977.
Seddon Atkinson 400 Series was Reg No BNF 824T which was new to Ancliffe in June 1979.
You were busy yesterday Paul, more good stuff and photos. That brings back memories the photo of the
winter heating panels. People still used to cover part of the radiators in the 70’s on some trucks in the
winter. Good stuff,thanks for posting.
