Monk Atkinson.I’m guessing this must have been part of a batch of vehicles registered by a dealer in Lancashire: J B Rawcliffe had STF 851M (it still survives, I believe, having belonged to K & P Iddon for several years), Ferrymasters in Preston had 852 & 3 (possibly 854 as well), whilst this is 855.
Sounds about right then Chris, possibly Road Vehicles Ltd.
Hi John,
Sid Halfpenny went under the name of the drunken duck when he was with WG Davies…then is son Paul took the name on when he started driving…I know both Halfpenny’s yes but I know Paul more than is father…Sid McVeigh also had a son Paul to he also drives to…he drives for T Quality in Swansea he also done time o’m the Removals to.
Some nice old pics you have put up there again John…
I remeber the Falconers Austin still on the road and working in the 90s.
Regards Mark

We have had a fair few Seddon Atkinson 400’s on here.Hi Dean, Seeing Rewsons 400 remember this truck brand new the guy who drove it new lived a couple of streets away from me…The rumours were back in the day that’s why I’lltyd Thomas switched from Atki’s to ERF’S. …because Prails the Atki dealers in Swansea at that time give preference to Rewson when they ordered a new Atki 400. …so Thomas’s kick them into touch and Went to Gwyn Bowens in Gorseinon and stuck with ERF’S. …that’s the story that was doing the rounds back then
Good story “marktaff”

Bit more on Atkinsons and Seddon Atkinsons.Interesting article on the Sutton’s motor: the chassis number gives it away as an Atkinson build: they reached 29941 with Atkinsons and started again at 30001 with the 400 Series. That was JTB 882P, whilst 885 and 888P were Borderers, 885P surviving today.
Oldham chassis numbers started at 60001. They used to reckon that there was a discernibly higher level of warranty claims for Oldham-built vehicles, although there was a certain partisan view, of course!
You certainly know your stuff on Atkinsons chap !
Frankydobo:
This sort of superior view from Atkinson seemed to work in their favour, many people even today think Atkinson took over Seddon or even merged instead of the opposite, I don’t think many realise how well Seddon was doing in the heavy vehicle market at the time and it seems they were quite willing to take it on the nose and allow Atkinson some leeway more than likely in the hope of holding onto Atkinson customers for the future which they probably did on the whole. I was fortunate to be able to ‘recover’ one of those Sed/Aki big A badges from a scrap vehicle, if I recall it did take some persuasion to remove it undamaged! Franky.
Thanks for your comments Franky.

Hello DEAN and Mark ,…can not say for sure where the Lloyds Bros yard was …my father says it went by the name of Fairwood garage probably near the steelworks …Mark my father adds that some of Lloyds drivers went to the McDonald boys …and that the lhd ERF could well have been sold to Walters at Pontlliw for spares …Yes DEAN ,…the old man is just in awe of these South Wales pics you are providing …so it is thank you very much from him …that Sedd Atki 8 tipper could well be J K Williams of Penygroes .Geraint
Thanks for your comments Geraint ! Good stuff
