DEANB ,the red drawbar looks like the Kellogs fleet but I am not sure if its a Brs Trafford park wagon as they did do the contract around that time .
Hi JAKEY,
You see a lot of those X Kellogs demount boxes in a lot of ATS Tyre places …I think the company that dispose of the old tyres must have bought a few.
This was prepped at Walton-le-Dale and not Oldham - you can see that the nearside bracket beneath the tail light has no badge, but four empty holes: apparently, the Atki chaps took off the SA badge and chucked it away, replacing it with the yellow Big A badge to match the number plate. When the Seddon people spotted it, they weren’t pleased, but had no replacement, and that’s why all the photos of it at that time show an empty bracket
They put a Big A on the grille too, and made it difficult to remove
There was a promotional film made at the same time, with operator interviews, the overwhelming majority saying Atki this that or the other, with scarcely a mention of Seddon.

Econofreight Atkinson.
Click on once to read. From 1973.
I believe that Mr Llewellin, the MD of Econofreight, used to insist on the Big A being removed - presumably he let them take the publicity shot first!
Not sure about the sleeper conversion: it looks like the ‘Nightingale’ conversion sourced via Atkinson Vehicles (London) but the side windows like different. I believe that Econofreight had several Atkis with these conversions
Thanks for your comments Chris, quite a few hauliers took the truck badges off the front as per the
brewery trucks we had on here last week.

Hi Jakey and Dean, Yes, The red Volvo drawbar outfits from the mid 1990s were “Kellogs”. I met their drivers several times at Portsmouthwhilst waiting to board the ferry to Ouistreham (Caen). I got the impression that
they were Thompsons Transport from the Culcheth andGlazebury area, between Warrington and Manchester, but no connection with T & T Thompson from the same area, who I think are stilloperating today. I believe they were usually loaded for Barcelona and Valencia, then down to Almeria region to load back with fresh fruitfor the U.K. Regards Ray Smyth.
Thanks for confirming it was Kellogs Ray.

“chucked it away” thats a cracker Chris !
The Atkinson people considered themselves and their lorries distinctly superior to the Seddon people and their cheaper and lighter vehicles
I’m guessing this must have been part of a batch of vehicles registered by a dealer in Lancashire: J B Rawcliffe had STF 851M (it still survives, I believe, having belonged to K & P Iddon for several years), Ferrymasters in Preston had 852 & 3 (possibly 854 as well), whilst this is 855.

Hi Dean,
Seeing Rewsons 400 remember this truck brand new the guy who drove it new lived a couple of streets away from me…The rumours were back in the day that’s why I’lltyd Thomas switched from Atki’s to ERF’S. …because Prails the Atki dealers in Swansea at that time give preference to Rewson when they ordered a new Atki 400. …so Thomas’s kick them into touch and Went to Gwyn Bowens in Gorseinon and stuck with ERF’S. …that’s the story that was doing the rounds back then

Interesting article on the Sutton’s motor: the chassis number gives it away as an Atkinson build: they reached 29941 with Atkinsons and started again at 30001 with the 400 Series. That was JTB 882P, whilst 885 and 888P were Borderers, 885P surviving today.
Oldham chassis numbers started at 60001. They used to reckon that there was a discernibly higher level of warranty claims for Oldham-built vehicles, although there was a certain partisan view, of course!
This sort of superior view from Atkinson seemed to work in their favour, many people even today think Atkinson took over Seddon or even merged instead of the opposite, I don’t think many realise how well Seddon was doing in the heavy vehicle market at the time and it seems they were quite willing to take it on the nose and allow Atkinson some leeway more than likely in the hope of holding onto Atkinson customers for the future which they probably did on the whole. I was fortunate to be able to ‘recover’ one of those Sed/Aki big A badges from a scrap vehicle, if I recall it did take some persuasion to remove it undamaged! Franky.
