Hi Dean,
Thanks for sharing even more gems.ILLTYD THOMAS were a long established welsh steel/general haulier.Their main yard was in cocket (swansea)with another in fforestfach. They had many outbased vehicles mainly working for Metal Box.The obscure looking home made trailer in your shot was one of many, built inhouse, they carried steel out and alluminium frag.back.
I was once,30 plus years ago kicked out of the yard because i asked, why they had one clean tandem trailer with perfect tyres and mudflaps and looking immaculate and always parked in the same spot in the yard and it rarely moved and was never ever loaded.I think? it was what you might call? The MOT trailer, lol.Happy days.
It didnt matter what time of the day or night you were on the M4 in south wales back then, you would always see one or more of illtyd’s on the road.Towards their final years they ran early DAF 95 and 190.36 IVECO’s.Joint motorways were offered a fairly new DAF that had been treble shifted to norwich from swansea 7 days a week, even though it was only 18 months old it was destroyed,i cant recall the km’s now, though as you can imagine,it was inter gallactic. The night heater (unused) had been removed with an axe! The engine oil was like bitumen.
I gather? the “string vest” remains of the now rotten 30 year old IVECO’s are still in the now overgrown yard. Thanks for the memory of a much missed welsh haulier of old…
Great story about Illtyd Thomas Andrew,I remember them well int 70s. When you mentioned their yard in Fforestfach it reminded me of another South Wales haulier called Philip Jones from same place.I was once congratulated on the net for spelling Fforestfach with two “F”.
I think I read somewhere on here that a regular Illtyd driver ran MB Neath to Poole and after tipping put the sides up and ran scrap back? Did it for years?
That Leyland could be J.H.ROSE from Dorset, Buzzer

Hi Chris and Dean,
Thanks for the kind words from you both.Chris,I think Cheltenham based Ralph Davies’ First lorry as an owner driver was an ex Philip Jones motor? I will text my mate Bob,he is an authority on South Wales haulage and can put me right on that.Dean here is another of Illtyd,s hard worked motors, courtesy of truck photo legend and good friend of mine Marcus lester.Loaded with aluminium frag from Poole,as Chris correctly said an everyday run for Thomas’s.

Thats a cracking Bubbs pic, looks like the trailer is struggling to keep the load, bulging nicely !
Is this the same Philip Jones ■■
As for Ralph i seem to remember him telling me years ago, his very first truck was a Bedford. He also had
a Magirus Deutz, before all the Scanias and Volvos.

Hi Chris,
My mate Bob text me to tell me that Philip jones from fforestfach was Ralph Davies’ uncle.Thats where Davies got his red and black colour scheme from,as can be seen with the shot of a phillip jones crusader.i remember Thomas’ trading as Malopium Transport by that time they were running factory white trucks.
Regards Andrew.

Hello Dean ,that is agreat shot of Eric Wards Foden …most of their work was out of Alcan Rogerstone …very smart little fleetthey would also be seen at Alcoa Gowerton …that unit may have ended up with Harley Lewis down in Pembrokeshire …happy days Geraint
Good to see a Frank Wright’s Foden, they seem thin on the ground. They had a smart Foden fleet of flats and powder tanks running from Ashbourne.

Hi Dean,
I think the big J could have been based at sully near barry? Wincanton had quite a large presence in South Wales back then.
Regards Andrew.
Morning Dean,
A.R Davies was from Kingswinford near Dudley, packed in now and houses built on the yard, it is the same company that ran the 2 “newly registered” AEC Marshall Majors in their customers livery, Cheer’s Pete
