Its the compressor pipe which will be connected to a compressor which is underslung on the chassis the pipe then connects to the tank (as you can see from the picture) and air is then transferred into the tank which allows you to blow the load off as against a pump system for pumping the load off which is used mainly on flammable liquids.

Nice one Dean and thanks to Paul

Hi Dean,
Thanks for sharing even more gems.ILLTYD THOMAS were a long established welsh steel/general haulier.Their main yard was in cocket (swansea)with another in fforestfach. They had many outbased vehicles mainly working for Metal Box.The obscure looking home made trailer in your shot was one of many, built inhouse, they carried steel out and alluminium frag.back.
I was once,30 plus years ago kicked out of the yard because i asked, why they had one clean tandem trailer with perfect tyres and mudflaps and looking immaculate and always parked in the same spot in the yard and it rarely moved and was never ever loaded.I think? it was what you might call? The MOT trailer, lol.Happy days.
It didnt matter what time of the day or night you were on the M4 in south wales back then, you would always see one or more of illtyd’s on the road.Towards their final years they ran early DAF 95 and 190.36 IVECO’s.Joint motorways were offered a fairly new DAF that had been treble shifted to norwich from swansea 7 days a week, even though it was only 18 months old it was destroyed,i cant recall the km’s now, though as you can imagine,it was inter gallactic. The night heater (unused) had been removed with an axe! The engine oil was like bitumen.
I gather? the “string vest” remains of the now rotten 30 year old IVECO’s are still in the now overgrown yard. Thanks for the memory of a much missed welsh haulier of old…

Hi all, I remember the Bedford TM…what I remember was there were three of them in total brand new in Nelsons Bedford compound in Swansea.
The name they ran under was Tom Harty Meat Supplies, hence the cows head on the cab…then often saw them on the road pulling 40ft fridges.

2Raising the roof on those draw-bar trailer outfits enabled 45 flexible foam blocks to fit in a space normally occupied by 18.
For loading and unloading hydraulic jacks raised the roof from 13 foot to 21 foot.

1Harrison & Jones (Flexible Foam ) Ltd were based at Swan Mill in Middleton near Manchester and Bee Mill Royton Oldham and were one of the leading foam seat manufacturers in the automotive industry.
Virtually all their fleet were Foden vehicles made up of a mixture of artic’s and draw-bars.

0Keep up the great work Dean will look back in on Monday when we get back from a few days away.

I had a S104 Foden with the same drivetrain and a 320 Gardner … loved it

Plenty of artic Mastiff’s about in the 70’s Deanb, my Dad had one like this, and I believe Dennis’s first two artic’s were Mastiff’s. NMP.
