Raising the roof on those draw-bar trailer outfits enabled 45 flexible foam blocks to fit in a space normally occupied by 18.
For loading and unloading hydraulic jacks raised the roof from 13 foot to 21 foot.

Harrison & Jones (Flexible Foam ) Ltd were based at Swan Mill in Middleton near Manchester and Bee Mill Royton Oldham and were one of the leading foam seat manufacturers in the automotive industry.
Virtually all their fleet were Foden vehicles made up of a mixture of artic’s and draw-bars.

Keep up the great work Dean will look back in on Monday when we get back from a few days away.

Hi Dean,
The red 290 in this shot was later ran by the notorious Mclennan twins from port talbot on middle east work…

Hello Andrew, you need to tell us some stories about these dodgy companies you keep mentioning

Somebody told me over 35 years ago in Istanbul that the Mclennan twins were operating out of an old armchair, next to the payphone in a working men’s club in Port Talbot. Could that be true Andrew.
It was either one of Hick’s drivers or a lad called Colin from South Wales who used to deliver two Jaguar cars in a box van to lots of places in the middle east.

B.T.W. thank you Paul John for the info on Hughes.

Hi Dean,
The red 290 in this shot was later ran by the notorious Mclennan twins from port talbot on middle east work…

Ashfordby Haulage and Storage from Melton Mowbray had a big contract with the nearby Pedigree Petfood company it was run by Earnie Dolby and his son
At Stirlands we used to run to and from Melton to our Lenton depot and store petfood which was then redistributed and delivered to customers in the North of England and all over Scotland

Ashfordby Haulage are still going strong with a very tidy fleet of mainly Volvo’s & Mercedes. I see them a lot in Great Bear Desborough…

P & O Roadways ERF

That Coastal Roadways ERF artic would more than likely operate out of BP Chemicals Baglan Bay. The tank is labelled ATW which means Approved Tank Wagon IIRC,so could carry alcohols and associated products under customs bond. Hazchem code is 1095 which, according to a list on tinternet is no longer in use.The number is familiar, just can’t recall what product it was… :frowning:

hi.
That all sounds about right to me.That could well have been Port Talbot small boat club?,which for a while was the Mclennan’s business poastal address! Many many years ago,i went in the car as a kid to heathrow with a friend of the twins,to collect one of them.He came through security on a flight from Bahrain in the middle of december wearing just a pair of shorts and flip flops with a carrier bag full of cash,i was still counting it at reading! Everyone in haulage in south wales has a Mclennan tale to tell…
regards Andrew.

0Keep up the great work Dean will look back in on Monday when we get back from a few days away.

ER Carpenter* had a ‘Crush’ trailer imported from the USA (where they hail from and incidentally made what was ICI look like a corner shop in size!) There was an internal chain driven board which crushed the blocks of flexible foam and this allowed twenty four vice eighteen blocks to be loaded. The down side to this was that it took roughly 24hours for the blocks to ‘recover’ to there normal size, the trailer was destined to only run between Glossop and Penallta in South Wales. The project was doomed from the start, when they went to Liverpool docks to collect the trailer it couldn’t couple up due the location of the kingpin and the position of the fifth wheel on the 4x2 units so a 6x2 unit had to be hired to get the trailer from Liverpool back to Glossop. Two of the F reg Scanias had to be modified slightly to couple up to the trailers so their work allocation had to be carefully monitored (which inevitably it wasn’t!) The final straw came when the control lead was either left in Glossop or South Wales as the Americans had only supplied one lead!

*who took over Hyman who, had taken over Draka Foam!)

Dean ,the Hoveringham lorry is perhaps mammoth transport ,note the mammoth on the door ,phop will know more

Western Transport.

It was probably still in Westerns ownership then looking at the fridge but Mark, you may recall it was bought by Joe Hinds and he later went on to pull containers with it for Stretton - the firm that derived from Poplar Transport at Lymm (I think!)

Great picture there Dean thanks [emoji1303]

This is a shot of two loads of Pet Foods from Asfordby Storage Melton Mowbray, which IIRC one was destined for Barrow and the other was going to Whitehaven, both consignees were Wholesale grocers who are now long gone. Cheers Dennis.

Hoveringham had the Hairy Mammoth logo on their trucks from way back, as has been said a skeleton of one was found in a pit ‘somewhere’ around Lincolnshire/Notts I believe? Needlers, the confectioners, owned the company at one time.
