That’s a brilliant article to read! Proper old fashioned ‘make do and mend’ haulage that will probably never happen in the UK nowadays, making a truck last by adapting it to changing trends in their aspect of haulage. Good to read about the less publicised areas of the transport industry as well.

Pete.

The Doulton Ford pantechnicon is based on the Ford Passenger Chassis with body by Boalloy we had one the same. It was our first Turbo Charged vehicle & extremely fast. I understand (confirmed at our last drivers reunion) that it was pulled in on the M6 doing 96 MPH although at times it may have exceeded that as the driver mistakenly thought the police would stop following & trying to catch him as he crossed into Scotland

Splendid, thank you!

Pandoro always did a better livery job with the sleepers, I thought, by painting the whole side white and using bigger letter - it was advice they took after winning the 1978 Comical Motor livery competition. Here’s a link to one on Flickr, from Chris Richard’s brilliant photostream:

That’s a raee shot of Antell’s Atkinson ‘Leader’ 6x2 tractor, before they stretched it and rebuilt it as a double drive tractor with a sleeper cab.

It’s now in preservation after a life in showland:

Interesting article there Dean as Tom Riding hired a few motors to Bailee Freight Services.

Atkinson Borderer Reg No RWW 144M Fleet No 25 ‘Flamboyant’ was originally registered new on the 1st of April 1974.
Fitted with a ■■■■■■■ 220 engine in line with a Fuller 610 gearbox It is seen here in the livery of Bailee Freight Services of Yarm to whom it was on hire from W & J Riding.
Bailee built up a good business and opened a depot at Heysham harbour to move fertiliser to Ireland with Riding’s also hiring them around 30 trailers at the time.
When Tom Riding asked the late Mr Ken Potts, a founding director of the company, what livery did he wish to display on the vehicles he immediately said the colours of Leeds United Football Club.
After the hire period RWW 144M returned to the Riding fleet, retaining the same fleet number and name, as can be seen in the picture below.

After coming off hire to Bailee Freight Services of Yarm Atkinson Borderer Reg No RWW 144M Fleet No 25 ‘Flamboyant’ was brought in to the workshop at Longridge, fitted with an in house sleeper cab and repainted back into the familiar Riding livery.
Assigned to the general haulage fleet it remained in service for a number of years until, on the 9th of June 1981, it was finally sold on to a Mr John Lowes of Newcastle on Tyne for the sum of ÂŁ1,700 plus vat.

As the ropes are that close it looks like it might be a “net” on that Wright Foden load ! Cheers Dennis

Yes, I thought the roping was a “belt and braces” job. Possibly it was a load of small plastic sacks, which were notoriously difficult to secure. There have been some good examples of the sheeting art on this thread. Fond memories.

Anyone recognise the Bedford tanker ■■? If you look close there is a pic of a cows head near the back
of the cab ■■

Hi all, I remember the Bedford TM…what I remember was there were three of them in total brand new in Nelsons Bedford compound in Swansea.
The name they ran under was Tom Harty Meat Supplies, hence the cows head on the cab…then often saw them on the road pulling 40ft fridges.

Hi Dean, i drive Robbins somebody posted pics above today !
