I remember one Saturday morning early 70s I had loaded at LCOW Canvey Island when I worked for A E Evans and was in weighbridge office waiting for my delivery notes. The weighbridge itself was quite a distance from the office and weighman flashed a light when you had tared in and weighed off.
A Wim Vos Volvo with a spread axled tandem on single wheels came onto the bridge and weighman said “Watch this”. The scales went up to 40 tons and wouldn’t weight the Vos artic :open_mouth: so weighman made a sign to driver to drop trailer and pull tractor off.I think the trailer was summat like 36 or 37 tons gross, and loaded with Latex from somewhere in Europe. Weighman told me that Vos started using Dieppe - Newhaven when overloaded as they were never checked there, and it had been known for one load to be blown into another loaded tank.I don’t know if this was true in early 70s? Anybody know?

Earls Transport Volvo F86. Dont remember seeing many 8 wheelers with a rear lift ? There were
thousands of six wheelers fitted with rear lift.

Hi Dean, Great photo’s once again.
6x2 tag was normal in Sweden for many years but they could not get thier head arround 8x4 ( why, when we have 30 ton 6x4 ) so they allowed Irvine, Scotland to set up and make 8x4 (30 ton ).
Import long 6x4 and add the second steer. drag link etc, so this was also done with, as you say, a few 6x2 tags.
Volvo do not allways get it right ( not just the 290) but here is my attempt to show there “Robson Drive”, a blind man could see it had no future. Who can remember it ■■?
The sprocket would come down between the 6x2 bogie to give double drive !!! yep they tried it. Honestly, dont shout at me, they did try it.
The tyre companies loved it ha !! Harvey

There’s nothing past tense about Robson drive.

Hello acd1202, Well it goes to show you are never to old to learn. Great posting.
The drive ring looks a little more gentle than the one I remember ( made by Isinbard Brunel i think ) but the principle is the same. Any idea how successful it is ■■? Thanks again. Harvey

Scammell pre dated this Volvo idea with some of the rigid eight models. The rear axles had sprockets behind the wheels and a chain could be fitted around these to make it double drive.
Not nice fitting the chain if you got stuck in snow and had to crawl underneath, most likely get plastered in grease as well.

Anyone recognise the F86 ■■?
I think it must belong to a subbie, as I would say the trailer and load must surely be one of Bewicks ?

My recollection of Silcock and Collins was very much Ford contracted, tho’ the pic shows a load of Hillman Avengers, so Rootes as well, then Tolemans appeared at Dagenham so I guess Silcock and Collins got swallowed up by them. A Hoynor trailer, no top deck safety rails only car door handles to hang onto dropping the top deck sent the front end quite a bit off terra firma
Great thread, remember a lot of the names that crop up on here.

Hi Oily

I’m fairly certain Bernard Holmes sold Silcock Express to Tibbett & Britten in around 1992 T&B also took over Toleman Group in around 1993 - 94 they merged the two and later rebranded as Axial. T&B themselves the victims of a takeover by Excel in 2004

You’re right Oily, Silcocks & Collins did indeed have the Chrysler contract in Coventry for a While, but only 2 Avengers on that load, the rest were Horizon’s, they were based up Stoney Stanton rd back then.

Hello DEAN …great shots Wm Morgan …that Dodge went like the wind and my father says it was with a Talgarth based driver …the Transcon was with a Hay driver for a while and did continental work out of Llanelli Radiators …T D (Tommy) Williams also had a Transcon on delanair work…that also crossed the channel…excellent stuff …Geraint.

Gunness Hauliers also had a tank farm either side of the A18 near Keadby Bridge. We used to load Methanol out of there, quick loading,in and out in a hour. :sunglasses:
