My recollection of Silcock and Collins was very much Ford contracted, tho’ the pic shows a load of Hillman Avengers, so Rootes as well, then Tolemans appeared at Dagenham so I guess Silcock and Collins got swallowed up by them. A Hoynor trailer, no top deck safety rails only car door handles to hang onto dropping the top deck sent the front end quite a bit off terra firma
Great thread, remember a lot of the names that crop up on here.
Oily

You’re right Oily, Silcocks & Collins did indeed have the Chrysler contract in Coventry for a While, but only 2 Avengers on that load, the rest were Horizon’s, they were based up Stoney Stanton rd back then.

You’re right Dieseldog66, a visit to Specsavers is on the cards.

Hi Oily

I’m fairly certain Bernard Holmes sold Silcock Express to Tibbett & Britten in around 1992 T&B also took over Toleman Group in around 1993 - 94 they merged the two and later rebranded as Axial. T&B themselves the victims of a takeover by Excel in 2004

Hi Spud, I left Progressive, Oct '68 and in the early '70s Progressive then became James Cars, in turn swallowed up by Toleman and a move to Milton Trading Estate, still had mates on there but lost track of who owned who.
Oily

Some crackers today, especially the Roger Marshall Scammell Crusader. Great stuff!

This is r c Marshall Newport and the scammell Is r Marshall Newport just wondering if they are the same cheers John. (Ps sorry if these are someone’s pics )

Hey DEAN , as usual some great pics ! the Alpha steels Maggie is probably a contract Derek Price of Nash unit ,he hauled out of their along with Richard Read and John Watkins of Abergavenny .
Lovely pics of Morgans Ystradgynlais , the Dodge was indeed a flyer up the Craig ! Would be good to see some of their AECs if any available ,they had Mercury units coupled to single axel boxvans hauling seat frames to Longbridge and Cowley . Owens used second hand Atki Borderers on similar work , thanx Dean , regards Keith .

The tipping trailer behind the Gunness hauliers’ Guy has a very high front bulkhead, why? I can follow that a load may shift forward under braking, but that seems excessive. Is the ram hidden in the first few feet of the body because more height is needed to tip a long body? Presumably whatever it normally carries is very dense.

Thanks for your comments Keith, the Dodges seem to have a strong following as there have been
alot of them.

Good point “cav551” does seem a bit strange like you say ! I wonder if it was cut down possibly or
built like that originally. The ram could possibly be underneath ■■ :unamused:

I wonder if the Spanish Dodge was an ex Chrysler demo or ex their “in house fleet” judging by the Blue and white colour scheme ? Cheers Dennis.

Hi dean, dennis tookthe words out of my mouth about the dodge, the foden bulker is one of Taylors of lichfield, there yard was just after the first junction on the a38 after you left the a5, just up a bit on the right you could see it thru the fence in winter . there fleet was mostly fodens & mostly rough looking!!! lol

Looking at the Foden tipper it has a Staffordshire reg it looks like one of Robin Taylors from Lichfield

A02320.JPGBlue Dart Seddon Atkinson 400 Series Reg No WNB 999S.
Below is a picture of it’s stable mate Reg No WND 996S both were new in March 1978.

Originally the transport arm of British Vita a competition was held amongst the drivers to come up with a name that had a connection with the Blue letter V that stood for Vita.
A driver called Barry Newton came up with the idea that if you turn the Blue V on it’s side then you got The Blue Dart hence it became Blue Dart Transport.

2017-07-20 19.48.52.jpg Blue Dart had depots across the country with Stakehill at Middleton near Manchester which opened in 1972 being their main office.
Enfield covered London, the South East, East Anglia, up to Milton Keynes in the North and as far as Oxford in the West.
Alan Gilzean the ex Totenham Hotspurs and Scottish International soccer player worked there as a business manager getting Blue Dart new contracts.
Bristol depot which was run by Stuart Wiltshire operated from a portacabin next to Temple Meads railway station later moving onto the docks at Avonmouth.

Bristol covered the West Country, the South West down to Southampton and the whole of South Wales.
Stoke depot was run by Albert Wain and worked mainly out of the Michelin factory in Stoke and covered most of the Midlands.
Barrow-in- Furness depot was started after Blue Dart took over Cooksies Transport of Barrow and worked mainly out of the Bowater Scott paper factory, they covered ■■■■■■■■ The Lake District , Carlisle and parts of South West Scotland.

Fence Houses near Houghton -le -Springs in County Durham covered the North East and North Yorkshire and parts of South East Scotland.
Paisley which was situated in the Vitafoam depot on Neilston Road covered the rest of Scotland and did the C.P.C. contract along with Stakehill out of Trafford Park.
United Biscuits out of Dundee and Michelin Tyres were just a couple of the very large contracts Blue Dart had at the time.
At the Vitafoam plant on Don Street in Middleton there was a garage and a lorry park which Blue Dart used and all the rigid vans along with some artics based there did all the Vitafoam transport.

Apologies if i have missed anything out but that gives you a general idea of how big a concern they were back in the day.

Well yes, actually! I thought that the wheelbase looked a bit long for its age, and the number rang a bell too: as you can see, it’s undergone something of a transformation!
