Tyre change call out with a bit of know how and brute strength.
Did plenty of that in the late 70’s/early 80’s when I was on for NTS. No lane closures or air jacks in those days and mostly split rims
Ralph Trucks of South Africa what might have been, read the story click on an image to get a slideshow.
I thought it was Frank Carson ![]()
Would love a quick go with a 14 spd Fuller just to see if I can still make it sing.
..or is that one in the pic an 18,.had a few beers my brain won’t work.![]()
Must be what?.. 96 ish since I last used one☆’?
Loved them, …hated the twin splitter ‘replacement’.
The pictured one is an 8 speed, we never got them.
Not sure what a14 is, but you’ll be fine ,Robroy, it’s like riding a bike.
Just don’t let Carryfast near a 15, he never graduated from a trike.
Ha Ha, and here was i looking forward to some expertise discussion from C/F as to exactly what that Eaton Fuller transmission really is & how to make it sing for optimal efficiency!
Had a rotten few days with blessed man flu
so could do with cheering up from the master here ![]()

Alston Foundry did similar work to Qualcast they used to deliver castings into the Midlands then reload with foundry sand from about Bromsgrove I think. They used to stay at Durose Cafe in Newcastle U L regularly.
I don’t think we got the 8-sp here either, and not with that knob (not you, Robroy
, the gearlever). It’d all come back to RR once he’s sobered up. You never lose the ability to drive with proper gears. We didn’t have 14-sp either - never heard of those. Those trikes with RTX 14615 ‘boxes on the other hand: boy what a danger to pensioners on the pavements of suburban Britain they would be in the wrong hands (if they could get ‘em into gear)……
Or out of the yard.
“Boss, why’s this thing got two brake pedals?”
I could be way off beam here, but I’ve seen similar… umm, knobs on Eaton synchro range-change boxes (Hino perhaps?). IIRC there’s a deep low ratio (crawler) somewhere but you’ll have to take the gear lever for a walk to the other side of the cab, likewise reverse.

Hino, that could explain why I’ve never seen one. I didn’t know Eaton made a syncro 'box.
They did, I think Ishitzsu used them too (without that knob) in their heavy rigids. In the Hino, the problem (one of the problems) was that the linkage was cable-operated. You can imagine how precise the change was after 400K km on urban/ inter-urban work.
As sober as a judge at this moment Ro…,.But it is so long since I used a Fuller Box, I’m still confused with memory about them .![]()
“Chinese six” Scammell(?). ‘B’ reg suggests '63 or '64 but you’d expect the Michelotti cab. Headlights off an Atki(?). It reminds me of a song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uErKI0zWgjg
