I guess that there are too many and would be too heavy a load if actually paper, plus not enough rope. But I agree the same size, shape, as paper reels.
Long before round bales.
I’d say rolls of hessian used in making linoleum, used to see them in Kirkcaldy (Nairns) back in the '50s.
Just remembered I had photos somewhere of Nairn lorries which I posted back in Past and Present Pt1.
This guy making his ‘‘Camion Stew’’ on the side of the road, ……maybe on his way to the Middle East in a 1966 AEC no frills bog standard day cab ffs willingly.
A bit before my time in the job but these types were real bonafide ‘‘Truckers’‘, in the days when ‘‘men were men’‘ as they say.
I always had and still have the utmost respect for these older guys, one of whom goes in my pub, he helped me out a lot when I was a young naive newbie, and I’ve never forgot him for it, I buy him a pint every time I see him, and leave one ‘‘in the pump’‘ for him when I leave.
They are a ‘dying breed’ where some of the array of clowns, amateurs and ‘‘steerers’‘ in the job today ain’t fit to lick their boots.
What’s the story with the old BRS AEC in the middle with the luton box van body (presumably open top) with the sheet over it…..was that ‘‘a thing’‘ in those days?
Right, where to start?
The International Paints pic I have seen before and remember thinking what weight would be on that single axle trailer? ![]()
The Riding’s Otto. What is that figure on the end of the wall? Looks like a centaur, or the Devil. ![]()
@robroy Never had one myself but I remember seeing them so must have been a thing for some applications. But wouldn’t fancy climbing up to spread it though. ![]()
Risdon Semper. What a smart trio, almost perfect number sequence too, and what about the smart drivers? Peaked caps, collar and tie, greatcoats and shiny boots. ![]()
The wierdo with the steel beams, what is that, Koveko? See the bloke down the side putting tension on something, hope it is a chain and not a rope dolly. ![]()
Ward Brothers, were/are they from Sheffield, rings a bell with me. ![]()
The Micky Mouse. Had one of those for one trip, it had no engine side cover and was so hot in the cab that I had all the windows open in the middle of winter. ![]()
Walker’s reccer, what’s the artic driver got in the cab that is so heavy that it squidges the reccer so far down at the rear? ![]()
Right, that’s me done for the time being.

GOM’s the one to ask Harrisons had them on trunk i think
I’ve been to International Paints a few times not somewhere i liked going due to the amount of time waiting. Not a patch on Proctor & Gamble at Seaton Delaval though a bit further up the road .Now they were in a different league they made it up as they went along
International Paints picture is taken at their site in Felling Gateshead, that’s the Tyne in the background. Sorry no further info.
Know nothing re the beams in the desert.
The Wards ERF trio were based in Frosterley. Co. Durham, used to do a lot for Blue Circle Cement who has a large plant in the area. Do not think they are related to the Sheffield Ward’s.
81 year old driver on for Grampian Continental.
81 good on the ol’ boy👍
I think they were top-loading bulky bales of wool. BRS previously used Scammell rigid 8s nicknamed Showboats.
That’s the pilot that reversed the double trailer onto the bay in one hit, nothing after landing that there😁
So you can’t spell Meshershmitt either ![]()
I can’t even pronounciate it. ![]()
that wrecker was a 8 wheel tipper for yuill and dodds. 530 V8 remember it on road. And they had a 500 Cummins erf 8 wheeler
leyland should of made new agro cabs that shape of the gas turbine. But another company run by idiots. That face lift would of worked nicely. like 6 wheel tipper.
