The break in torque actuates the shift.
Which is achieved by theâŚâŚ.. accelerator.
So any change in the accelerator application and resulting change in torque, after preselecting the shift, will actuate it.Which makes preselection virtually impossible.Thatâs exactly what I said.
What has that got to do with floating constant mesh gears.Which is bad practice because of the potential for a torque load in either direction to be applied to a partially engaged/disengaged dog or gear in the case of sliding mesh.Thats why double de clutching was invented.

Yes, Mercâs installation of knock-thruâ ZFs was the worst of the lot. They werenât so bad when the mechanism was worn and the lorry was ready for the knackers yardâŚ
Not in the least odd! They varied hugely. Think ZF 16sp syncro: ghastly in a Merc, excellent in a DAF. Think Eaton Twinsplitter: hopeless in a Sed-Atki, superb in a MAN. I could cite loads more examples. Itâs the installation that counts!

The first 95s were heavy gear changes but nothing like the Mercs but they sorted that quite quickly the 2800s i drove had the knock over and they were ok too
- Your first sentence. You engage 1st position on the 3-position switch and timing it beautifully, you move the stick from 1st stick position to 2nd stick position. You can do it with or without the clutch.
- Downshifts on the switch (there are 3 positions in each corner, remember) can be done clutchlessly. Downshifts from stick positions to stick positions have to double-declutched, obs.
It is not âbad practiceâ in a gearbox specially designed by geniuses to safely achieve what you call bad practice. You tell tell âem CF, all those charlatons at Eaton: wouldnât know a gear-stick if it wacked them round the head ![]()
