Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 2)

Every now and then, my youtube feed comes up with something on the sidebar; a glance of the thumbnail dismisses most but for some reason I clicked on this one:

The more I watched, the more fascinated I got, until I’d watched the whole thing. A Gardner 6LX(B) is familiar to me mostly because Bristol VR buses and their application on various lorries, but I aslo know of marine Gardner 5LWs and so on. None of this makes me a diesel mechanic BTW.

Anyway, there is more to this channel, including a 6-part stripdown and re-conditioning of a 6LXB from an Atki Borderer.

All 6LX/Bs must be 40-something years old by now, and the fact they are still running well and sought after tells you something.

Just to be pedantic, again, there was no 1965 6LXB, that would be a 6LX, the LXB didn’t come out until 1967.

Looks like his customer got stiffed by the previous “mechanic” who passed it off as a recon 6LXB.

That crankshaft lubrication feed.Should have used it as an anchor for the boat and put a couple of Detroit/MTU’s in it for the money.

I’m sure said owner would roll his eyes and treat the remark with the contempt it deserves.
Again Carryfast demonstrates his total lack of engineering knowledge and intelligent speccing of any motorized vehicle or vessel.

Oh steady on, he did work for Surrey County Council and for all you and I know they employed Detroit diesels in their fleet… not that I ever saw one in all the years I lived and knocked around SW London and Surrey and Sussex and… I do remember, however, quite a few Gardner-engined vehicles.

Please don’t post photos of 8 wheel tankers abandoned in woodland…I’m still traumatised by those b loody ladders. I wish I’d a shilling for everytime I’d run up and down 'em, thank god for bottom load and discharge. :wink:

I’d like to say a word of thanks to Mr Ramone for posting photos of such a wide variety of working, older, lorries. They cheer an old lorry driver up. Keep 'em coming Ramone.

@grumpy_old_man yep a bob a go would make me rich too.
I used to load at one of the last, remaining top load terminals. It even had its own unique induction. The first rule was; Don’t drop your cigarette buts on the ground. Fortunately, it was a diesel only terminal. :rofl:

One incident long ago at a Leeds terminal, one guy (local village idiot) pulled under the gantry, popped the lids open ready for loading, and a static spark caught, it made a hell of a pop, clean underwear all round. The idiot had ignored the ‘no man made fibre’ clothing rule. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
