That’s to catch useful rainwater running off the windscreen when the wipers have slowed to a crawl above 60 mph ![]()
Just noticed its an early one, with top mounted wipers ![]()
I worked for a small refrigerated company that did UK and continental work. The owner decided to get a photo of one of his wagons coming of the ferry for publicity so had a professional photographer waiting at the ferry. I was in the office when the post arrived with the photos and they were good pics of the wagon with a bucket hanging from the bumper. The dispatcher said “what’s the bucket for” and the owner who was in the office said “I know what the bloody buckets for”. Those pics never went public. ![]()
The bucket hanging from the bumper was the fad of the day but if that were the case nowadays it would get nicked for sure

What were the 480 Turbostars rated at?
Good question, I don’t know, the 420 was 1401lbft, so I would say the same as the Merc, or very similar.
The Cummins E465 was 1429lbft, and the 143-470 was 1435lbft, the F16-470 was a touch more at 1485lbft, but the technology of the day, that was about it. The first thing to really move it on was the MAN 17-502 V10 with EDC that was 1735lbft, but a couple of years later.
The one I drove (like a hooligan) was rated very highly by me
it would pass anything but a fuel station.
I drove a brand new one now and then i think either G370 or G372 JCP .It was awesome.Been down to Caythorne for the first time today i hope its the last .Charming lady on the weighbridge and the bloke who loaded me must struggle to cross the road on his own.Went to your garage first to pick up one of your cast off trailers which to be fair was quite decent
I spent 4 hours in Caythorpe today just to tip and bloody reload
I was in your place in Leeds yesterday loading general. What’s that all about? Has the new all singing all dancing incinerator gone down?
I’ve found it! The 480 IVECO had a peak torque of 2050Nm or 1513lbft, so I would think for a while it had the highest torque output, albeit by a small margin.
RDF and bagwaste only for Skelton incinerator.RDF only for Ferrybridge but yesterday both cranes went down at Ferrybridge 2. I went back this morning with mine.I’m now sat at Clover Nook waiting for bagwaste for Skelton i’ve been here 3 hours so far he sent 5 of us down but not enough waste until the bin men arrive.Efficiency is a word very rarely used at our end
I did the press junket for that place just before its official opening! They brought me to Cross Green in a car and plonked me in the newly liveried mirrorless monstrosity.
I’d never driven one before and had about two miles practice before getting on site and performing ridiculous manoeuvres followed by a film crew and their drones.
I had visions of disaster, but luckily I managed to convince them that I actually knew what I was doing ![]()
I was lucky i missed it all i had the week off. You would have stuck out like a sore thumb in Leeds if you looked like you knew what you were doing
. For some reason all the waste is going down to Caythorne from Cross Green at the moment not sure why. The management work in strange ways. I went to your garage yesterday to collect a trailer and was gobsmacked that everything worked on it ours usually have no headboard or some damage .Mine went back off hire so somethings going on they off hired a few yesterday. How the hell do you get to Caythorne from Leeds , do you go on the A17 and if so where do you come off. From your garage i ended up on the A52 then went past Barkstone. What a place to put a recycling plant.
Brady Comet FEO 267 new into service 13/3/60 scrapped 31/1/69
McGuffie Transport Big J new into service September 1976 based for a time in Keswick driven by Brian Newton mainly running between West Cumbria and Milnthorpe.
Hiya Dennis…
Me and Brian were at National Carriers together on the Marchon to Scotland job tramping he often talked about working at Bewicks…
NCL bought 2 ex Ryder day cab Sed Atks for the job, which were completely done.
I had more top spec BRS Rental motors (in the same yard) than me driving the Sed Atk, due to breakdowns.![]()
Yeah me and Brian were good mates at the time, he was at my wedding in fact.
We lost touch after that.
Is he still around the area?
A while ago we were discussing the Volvo/Daf 340/360.
I thought the 360 had a B23, seems I was wrong. I may have seen one that had been converted from the B20, they’re the same basic block.
The B23 is very tunable, could make an interesting little hatch. ![]()
I can’t stand hubnut, but he proved me wrong.
The 360s over here were 2 litre ( GLS carb GLE GLT Injection ) The 340s i think were 1.4 Renault
That’s what I gathered from the video.
A tuned B23 in the small body would be interesting. My son has a well tuned B23 that can show its tail lights to a V8 Commodore.
