ILLTYD THOMAS & SONS.

This is a cracking picture of a machine discussed on this thread some months ago. I remember them well, I saw at least two of them in my time(1960s) on the old A6/A74, they are a bit of a legend, not least because, nothing else could keep up, even you empty, them loaded, anyway well done the restoration man.

Not as marvelous as they made out oily, I remember one night heading down to Scunthorpe with my late mate who had an Albion Reiver (and a pal of Bewick,s) We pulled onto the layby opposite the Clock Cafe on the A 1 just south of Scotch Corner and as we were about to cross the road for a cuppa one of P&S,s roared in behind the Reiver, there was a hell of a bang and the front nearside wheel of the Mack dropped off the edge of the layby into the field which was much lower then the layby level. The driver tried to reverse back onto the road but no amout of huffing, clutch slipping and bucking up and down would shift the wagon sitting with its front axle beam resting on the layby surface. After watching him for a while my mate suggested that he give him a pull out with the Reiver. The Scotsman reckoned we would never do it but nevertheless we pulled it back ont the road no bother. Apart from saying thanks the miserable (zb) never even offered to to buy us a cup of tea in the cafe. However it did make my mates day and he kept this tale for many years putting down anyone extolling the vitues of P&S Macks. There is a photograph in my local newspapers archives showing one of these wagons poking its long bonnet into someone,s front room on Scotland Rd in Carlisle.

Well “oily” I must disagree with you about P&S Macks,we could and did “■■■■ all over them” with the Brady Octopus 8 wheeler and trailer,I recall that we were in the Rosebank cafe at Gretna one afternoon,on our way to Glasgow and there was a couple of them in the cafe as well. When they upped and left,my mate Eric just winked at me,said finnish your tea lad,we’ll catch them two buggers up and “walk” past them further up road.We duly did!! ■■■■■■ all over them we did,and we were fully freighted as we always were!! I just gave them the “whip sign” out of the nearside window !!We did them a few times on the M6 as well, believe it or not thats the truth.Cheers Bewick.
This was the 8 wheeler that could show the P&S Macks a “clean pair of heels” JEO192 it was one of two that Bradys ran the other being the slightly older one HEO557.As a 19 year old,Iv’e been at the wheel of 192,in darkness!,on the M5 and I recall “walking” past an empty Shell Scammell Trunker doing 60 MPH,what a bollicking I got off my mate at Strensham when the Shell driver asked what speed we had been doing!!! My mate Eric was having a kip across the bonnet at the time. We’d been in Leyland Motors,Oldbury depot, for a repair all afternoon and we were on our way to South Wales loaded with 22ton of Signode strapping.

Hi Bewick, your tale of P& S would have suited RWB down to the ground and he would have backed you up in your claim 100% with a few appropriate descriptive words originating just north of Skiddaw.
I was off work with a broken leg in plaster at this time and consequently was riding shotgun in the Reiver. When we got to Scunthorpe with the two 7 ton moulds the crane driver informed RW that I had to get out of the cab because if he happened to drop a mould on the cab I would not be worth picking up. RW,s reply , "If thoo drops that mould on my cab A,hll be up that ladder into thy cab an thoo,ll not be worth picking up, so git lifting an tek it roond the cab an use a bit o common sense!! " Can you imagine the scene ■■
Cheers, happy days. Leyland 600
