Nice one Chris, but… I left the *COMS in August 1962 and I’m pretty sure your dad was on there when I joined COMS in August 1959, your dad was also on( I think ) B J Henry for a while when I was on Progressive, the 1963 licence I’m guessing would be a renewal( not sure but again I think this had to be every 3 years including a medical). I kept mine going for a while after leaving COMS. Your dad’s EE33348 badge was East Midlands and precedes mine EE35149 which I got in '59, so defo a renewal.
The bus in the pic is a Guy Arab (W Alexander and Sons, Fife) and the type I passed my PSV test on in Feb. 1956, my badge then was LL which was Scotland north region.
Cheers
Eddie

65432Snapped these Oily which one do do fancy driving? take your pick

Hi servo88
With the backdoor step at home a bit o’ a challenge nowadays  I don’t fancy clambering about on transporters anymore, came across this wagon and drag pic today and I had a similar wagon for a while, Commer with Perkins R6, Eaton two speed, went quite well but not as reliable as the Leyland Comet 400 also with an Eaton Two Speed and same Carrimore bodywork fabrication. That top deck front car had to be chained by climbing the front support frame and using both hands to secure the chains which were on ratchet cylinders, usually the mates job but some of them were not up to it. I do remember seeing the odd outfit with a ladder for the job, though I suppose they eventually found a domestic home somewhere. The chap in the pic is a young Tony Horn, son of Billy “Trader” Horn.

The Commer has a Coventry reg and is carrying at least one Triumph (Herald estate) so very close to home for me.

J Haydons ran 3 such Commers (although one was badged Dodge) - I recall the gear sticks seemed about 6 feet long and disappeared through the back of the cab in a flurry of angles. You needed a hairy chested man to pull the hand brake on and off too - big, heavy brass affair wasn’t it, on the driver’s right?

Hi adr, drivers were proud to wear their PSV badge when on duty and it was mandatory punishable by hanging according to Ministry men when checking school bus drivers in my area during the 1980s and 90s suddenly it was no longer a requirement then loads of scruffy drivers with tee shirts vests etc were the norm rather than a tie and uniform. Bus and coach driving then was a knowledgable occupation and skill especially with good quality Leyland’s and AECs with nice liveries not like the fully automated point and steer merchants of today who have been everywhere and know nowt !! just how to rip off their passengers.
Cheers Leyland 600

talking about bus drivers uniforms …Myself and many other Scottish drivers used to wear the jackets bought second hand at Glasgow markets they were warm hard wearing with leather cuffs … went well with bib and brace definitely fashion gurus !!!

Cheers backsplice… them were the days

When I started with W.Alexander and Sons, discipline was everything, enforced by inspectors (ex drivers). Firstly and most importantly was a reliable watch, it had to be a pocket watch and preferably with an GSTP stamp on the casing, that stood for Genuine Services Time Piece, i.e. ex MOD. Well turned out with white shirt, dark tie and the obligatory hat worn at all times whilst on duty, with one exception for a passing funeral cortege and the instruction was, stop the bus, remove your hat in respect until the procession had passed. Sitting driving played hell with trouser creases and a tip I had was to dry soap the inside of the crease before ironing, razor sharp for a while at least . White shirts with detachable collars were the order of the day, there were also stiff paper white collars, disposable, not at all comfortable.
When I moved south the dress code was more relaxed, though again it was up to the individual. Getting on for 60 years later, the one thing that has stuck with me is I’m still a bloody clockwatcher
