Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 1)

A double helping of steam Oily, road and rail. regards Kev.

Hi Bewick, Dovers just had four wheel tippers all Comets I think, they had thre or four in all and I suppose would operate on B licences mainly out of Threlkeld Quarry. The company ceased trading a number of years ago but a member of the family runs Greta Motor Body Works in part of the old Keswick pencil factory site where after acquiring an almost identical Comet he restored it to back into the firms old livery with a new body fitted.
Cheers Leyland 600

Those Comets remind me of Pat Kennett’s column in one of the truck magazines, called ‘Looking Back.’ They were brilliant. He often mentioned these round-nosed Comets and clearly had an enormous affection for them. I remember Brett’s Quarries of Canterbury used to run them into Whitstable Harbour (not literally) for ballast in the mid-60s. Robert

Another for CWM, this company’s main business was coal but they diversified to a detachable cattle box as there was obviously demand for this, Buzzer.

Superb shot that one L600 and a smart livery as well,I suppose Threlkeld quarry would be the nearest to Keswick and I wonder what kind of payload they’d manage on those bonneted Comets, and with a wooden drop-side body ? Can’t see how they’d make 10ton at 14ton GVW but who knows! Cheers Bewick.

Hi Buzzer, H&R Ainscough of Burscough Bridge Lancashire Telephone 3131 . My first ever return load was straw from a West Lancashire farm, my instructions being when you get tipped in Liverpool, ring Ainscough’s for details of the load to be picked up. August 1962. The first of many return loads off them.
Cheers Leyland 600.

This is a more-recent photograph of the H. & R. Ainscough Ltd. Leyland Hippo.
