Here’s one from the golden age of transport for you old truckers, borrowed from Ainacs, Buzzer.
stilltimecollection.co.uk/index.php hi Oily found this site great pics of old wagons if you put transporter in the search bar a very interesting AEC wagon and drag from coventry cant make the name out take a look cheers Mark
The Leyland Octopus GJM 768 was IIRC the last motor that went into service with J.B.Hudson of Sandside nr Milnthorpe in about 1960 which was about the time Maggie Bowman passed away, and as she was the maitriac (boss) and the founders,J.B.Hudson’s, daughter I believe the firm had lost it’s driving force when Maggie passed away or so I was told by one of the long serving employees.Maggie’s son Raymond quickly disposed of the 5 vehicle “A” licence to Athersmith Bros. of Barrow-in-Furness but unfortunately for them the motors had still to based at Sandside so in 1966 they sold the five vehicle firm to Davy & Co(Grange)Ltd. who were based in Milnthorpe.I believe this Octopus ended up with Walter Southworth of Rufford for it’s final years in operation. When this Octopus was new to Hudsons it driver would possibly have been “Tot” Baldwin or Ted Lowe.Cheers Bewick.
Hi Bewick. Yes I believe you are right, I am sure I have read this wagons’s history somewhere before, William Hunter must have acquired this one and another Octopus from Walter Southworth’s which he has restored into Southworth livery complete with Guinness tanks on the platform. This Octopus pictures sounds beautifull just as Leylands were in those days, I was informed yesterday that it has been sold to a new owner but he has opted to retain the William Hunter livery. By the way do you remember Dovers of Keswick with their small fleet of Comets. This one shown was bought in and restored by Ken Dover about three years ago.
Cheers, Leyland 600
It is strange how our tastes change over the years and how our ‘favourite’ trucks evolve. If you’d asked me as a school-leaver what I wanted to drive, I’d have asked for one of these! Robert
I’d ask for one today, IMO better than an automatic Euro box, all looking the same, that we see today. They can have the 400/500 even 700+ power units, give me a 9.6 or a 290 ■■■■■■■ with a 9 speed Fuller and I’m a happy man.

Hiya L600,thanks for the info on the Octopus,I got to thinking and I recall the paper mill at Beetham had a similar Octopus to this one in the shot and probably a similar reg no.Chris Swindlehurst will have the info as his dad Eric drove it,Eric also got the first Seddon unit when they changed from rigids to artics,it was a '67 “F” reg coachbuilt cab,180LXB/6spd DB/group axle. The next two units they got were two "G"reg '68 32/4’s with the new steel cabs but identical engines and drive lines to the “F” reg.I also believe that K.Fell at Milnthorpe also had a similar square cabbed Octopus which was driven by now long retired driver of ours,Eric Atkinson.I will have a word with both Eric and Chris to get the exact SP on these other two Leylands as they were probably supplied by J.B.Hudson at the time although I think the Paper mill had a strange method of purchasing their motors which were a combination of Commer four wheelers (finally Maxiloads),Albion Reivers and Leyland Retreivers and Octopus in that they were all supplied through J.Douthwaite & Son the Rootes dealer in Milnthorpe. The Paper mills first three Seddon units were supplied by Rotor Commercials of Carnforth, and their last two Seddons were supplied by “yours truly” via Scotts of Penrith in '72 & '73 which I bought back in late '76 when we took over all the traffic.Cheers Bewick.
One i used to own, don’t know who owned it 1st but was bright orange and is that a scottish reg?ta,Pete

Hiya L600 I can recall, vaguely,Dovers of Keswick, what sort of licence would they have had,an “A” or a “B” ? and did they run tippers ? they had a nice colour scheme for the time, brown and beige. What sort of traffic did they carry in their time, always interesting these old firms.Cheers Bewick.
