How many times would he have to return to the yard to reload ? or did a big motor follow him to the ends of the back lanes and tranship ? Cheers Bewick.

Hi Larry, The Gateshead registered Comet was ex Armstrongs Cork at TVTE, I think Jimmy Wilkinson (The Powells Preserves Albion) and possibly his son Ian were involved in the restoration of this Comet. I think Jimmy drove it for a living at one time.

ECN73 was the last of 4 Comets bought by Armstrong Cork, Gateshead. It was driven from new by Bill Willkinson ( Jimmy’s brother). Once finished on running to London twice a week, it was converted to a tipper for running Armstrongs waste to there tip at Beamish. ECN was replaced by one of Armstrongs Albion Riever in 1974, when Bill purchased it for presevation. ECN was converted back to its original livery and bodywork in the early 80’s. I have great memories of this motor and covered many miles both driving/ passenger with my uncle Bill. Kevmac will also confirm this as he has driven ECN.

Iain

I preferred it in the Armstrong colours to what it is now. Eddie.

He would have a loaded trailer which he could leave at the top of the lane. Just tranship from there.
