There’s an article in April’s Heritage Commercial about this motor and the three generations of the family involved in restoration. Geoff still works on brick delivery, we first met in the 70’s/80’s when he worked for John Gornall.Regards Kev.

Hi Kevmac, I worked alongside this ERF almost all of my working life in haulage knowing every driver it had. The text in Heritage Commercial says it was a flour tanker. Definitely not, it was bought by Carr’s Flour Mills as a bulk animal feed tanker with a two or three compartment Carmichael tank painted blue in Pattinsons Ideal Farm Feeds colours ( a firm taken over by Carr’s in the 1960s) who owned the Quaker Oats mill at Whitehaven before Quaker’s took over the mill.

Cheers Leyland 600

Love this shot as we are on ERF at the moment, the driver is so nonchalant and he is apparently waiting for fish to be loaded at Newhaven, Buzzer.

Hi Buzzer, It is a shame you photo is not in colour as Thomas Smith’s lorries were beautifully painted dark blue in traditional Scottish style as many Edinburgh area wagons were painted and lettered.

Hear’s a sister to the C S ELLIS ERF. I had KEB 470F for about 2yrs with McMurdo usually on London runs as she was better on fuel as the 2-stroke Commers. You could always tell the ex Knowels ERFs by the extra bar they fitted to the front it made them easy to recognise.

The ex Gerald Walkers ERF looks really well in its new owner Mike & Irene Bonner colours. Eddie.

How about an S type Bedford (I think), my mate had one on straw cart was a bit rolly on the corners as was a TK with 50 bales over the cab on a rack. Used to get used to that on corners, cheers Buzzer.

Hi Oily, thanks for posting the photo of my ex Henley Transport of Goudhurst ERK RKJ 160M now in Mike Bonner,s ownership up in Aberdeenshire, a lovely wagon to drive and very economical to take to rallies.
The Foden DHH 74 a Carlisle registration number and was owned by Thos Niven Ltd, Timber Merchants. I often encountered it while running up the A75 through Dumfries and Galloway, I am sure erfguy Eddie should be able to remember it.

Buzzer. Yes the company was known as Thomas Smith Junior Ltd. from Newhaven, Edinburgh. The two Eddies , erfguy and oilreader will bear me out on the standard and quality of of liveries in the Edinburgh area from the 1950s through to about 2000 where most of the ERFs were supplied by James Bowen Ltd.
Cheers, Leyland 600.

Gerald I had it in my head DHH was a Hallidays, so its no often I am richt but I am wrang again. Yes Smiths had a lovely fleet I think they finished up with Volvos?? There was a lot o nice motors in the Lothian area I was at a rally once in Musselburgh and a chap had a tent and all that was in it was a display of photos of Edinburgh area fleets a lot were fairly old and in black and white and right up to fairly modern stuff I don’t know who he was but it was a priceless collection. Eddie.

Hi Oily now this is what you call First class delivery, happened today in Gosport, Hampshire cheers Buzzer.
