I was only 21 when I first started delivering to Covent Garden (the original site) and Spitalfields. Threading your way through all those barrows was an acquired art!
Spits was worse than the Garden. But its all gone now & unless you were there its hard to describe the atmosphere & the characters. …& the bare-knuckle fights in Spits! A few porters were up & coming boxers & had a diet of chicken & just delivered lettuce - light work. But the older guys were the guvnors & could outbox any of the youngsters.
The two pics of 1961 show the 50 ton Centurion loaded behind the Diamond T manned by DPs (displaced persons, mainly Poles and Yugoslavs) and the 65 ton Conqueror loaded behind the Antar, with UK soldiers, loaded and bombed up overnight when the Berlin wall crises erupted.

Bit of a difference in the axle arrangements there over the years. Bit more switched on to road/bridge damage nowadays.

Top pic Oshkosh, here’s another one, rated at 700hp and a King GTS100 trailer with a 72ton payload for the transportation of the Challenger11 battle tank and or other heavy equipment.

Never gave it a thought until you mention it, so googled and it is necessary when tank is on transportation or laid up, it protects the turret mechanism (which is battery driven) when not in use, this from a battle tank maintenance manual
NOTE: Interior and exterior must be kept dry as possible and free of dirt and debris. Preventive maintenance checks and services must be done when vehicle is shut down and on a regular basis as scheduled. Turret must be in manual operation while turret is shut down.

Hello Oiley, Here’s three photos of skip motors from the Williamson Group of Elgin these motors are based in Dumfries and the buisness was originally Rosefield Salvage I see the first picture the motor is an ex Fraserburgh motor. Is the skip motor pictured further back on the thread belonging to D & S of Forres also from the Williamson Group as the paint jobs are pretty much alike. Eddie

Hi Eddie, probably is the same outfit, I can’t check any further at the moment as I have “lost” all my picture collection, this happened when clearing duplicates and other stuff of unknown origin, bloody and double bloody
anyway onward with attempts at recovery and hoping.

Aye that must be annoying because a lot of photos you only get the one chance at them.Eddie.

That came trundling through Dewsbury last Thursday.
Ongoing picture recovery latest, set up recovery software, Tues last, watching images being recovered from Backup, got to about 6000 and with some way to go I left it, later coming back to find system had crashed and was now in Safe Mode out of which it would not move, no matter what I tried, startup was Safe Mode, which is limited in what can be accessed, after two days of frustration, decided to re-intstall the whole OS (Windows 7) from scratch, spent another day loading all the other programs that had gone pre new installation. PC works ok again so another attempt at picture recovery starts now.
As from the very begining of this thread all picture contributions are welcome, non more so than now.

Good luck with the recovery Oily, I try to keep at least 2 copies of everything just in case but it is still a constant worry. Here are a couple of pictures showing how cement transport has changed with the same company over the last 10 years.(which I still know as Ribble Cement even though that name vanished many years ago before I started taking pictures).
