Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 1)

J.L Cooper of Milton had ERF tippers and powder tanks, they ran from some of the local Staffordshire quarries but have finished now I think.

Pete.

The Walkers Century Oil Octopus is a rare beast as it is single drive which there wasn’t many built as I understand. They either had the double drive Albion back end or the heavier Leyland built double drive. Cheers Bewick.

During my haulage career I have had a couple strange load requests, both came from G.J.Cooper who were customs clearing agents in Portsmouth. The first was to transport some giraff’s from Longleat to a zoo in Cheshire, well I was taken aback especially when they said they had an open top trailer to do the job and a map with all low bridges marked, declining the job thinking it was a wind up. The second was a call saying there was a trailer inbound loaded with lions & tigers to be taken to Chipperfields Winter quaters near Andover, well I asked if they were in a box trailer or a tilt, they were serious and told me the animals were bound for Spain but the paperwork was incorrect and the driver just dropped the trailer and bobtailed home, funny what happens in transport and never did that job either, Buzzer

I forget where it was (somewhere up north I think) I stopped to ask where this particular factory was, the bloke said he lived right near it, “give me a lift and I’ll take you straight there” jump in I said, we drove right across this town and the bloke said right if you drop me here, take the next left and the factory is about 200yds on your left, brilliant I thought, proceeded but of course no factory, indeed it ended up virtually back where I had originally picked him up! Git had just used me for a lift home!

Hi Buzzer, I know the owner of the green Thorneycroft up in Orkney well, also the Dourie Farms Foden I used to meet it regularly when I ran up into Dumfries and Galloway in the mid 1970s to 80,
Cheers, Leyland 600.

A bit of atmosphere in this street scene, a lamb sale day with a whiff in the air from bleating lambs. Esholt carrier parked by a Thomas the Baker shop so a Yorkshire town, but where?.

A fine collection of Albion’s parked up approx 1/2 a mile from where they were built. The first vehicle was registered in 1959 so would probably have been one of the very first LAD cabbed trucks. The building immediately behind the Seatrain containers is an admin block for the Clyde Tunnel which runs directly below their old yard.

Great selection today Buzzer.
