I recall this as the end of the day that i decided, that however well meaning,
i was not taking teenagers directions at face value ever again.!I forget where it was (somewhere up north I think) I stopped to ask where this particular factory was, the bloke said he lived right near it, “give me a lift and I’ll take you straight there” jump in I said, we drove right across this town and the bloke said right if you drop me here, take the next left and the factory is about 200yds on your left, brilliant I thought, proceeded but of course no factory, indeed it ended up virtually back where I had originally picked him up! Git had just used me for a lift home!
Even the bus service in places fell victim.
A few years back my brother was working for Midland Red (North) based in Wellington, Shropshire.
Like everywhere else a number of Polish drivers appeared and language problems soon emerged.
Some resorted to asking the passengers where the next stop was, and inevitably the local wise guys where being
dropped at their front doors, leaving the poor driver off his official route. !!

During my haulage career I have had a couple strange load requests, both came from G.J.Cooper who were customs clearing agents in Portsmouth. The first was to transport some giraff’s from Longleat to a zoo in Cheshire, well I was taken aback especially when they said they had an open top trailer to do the job and a map with all low bridges marked, declining the job thinking it was a wind up. The second was a call saying there was a trailer inbound loaded with lions & tigers to be taken to Chipperfields Winter quaters near Andover, well I asked if they were in a box trailer or a tilt, they were serious and told me the animals were bound for Spain but the paperwork was incorrect and the driver just dropped the trailer and bobtailed home, funny what happens in transport and never did that job either, Buzzer
when i was at salevsen northampton i did sometimes have to send my driver trainer to woburn to move the elephant in the DAF and special trailer salvesen donated to them , CF space cab with a gun rack in the cab just in case the elephant got loose . poor old thing was moved around europe to keep the numbers up so to speak, he’d outgrown the 7.5 tonner they had.

A bit of atmosphere in this street scene, a lamb sale day with a whiff in the air from bleating lambs. Esholt carrier parked by a Thomas the Baker shop so a Yorkshire town, but where?.
OilyI’m reliably informed that the photo was taken in Helmsley, between Thirsk and Pickering.
Thanks Chris.

0Yes used to come into our local too, happier days.
Most of our local Pubs had Shell Fish stalls outside and on Sunday afternoons a chap come around the streets with a Handcart selling Shrimps, Whelks, Winkles, Crabsticks and Jellied Eels, I like Jellied Eels to this day wasn’t too keen on the rest, I think everything apart from the Eels and Crabsticks were sold by the Pint…

A company from Southprt called Kershaws supplied the seafood to Sheffield area pubs and clubs.
They bought whelks, cockles etc in bulk from Van Smirren, a Boston Lincs firm and were transported in a SWB Commer TS3 tipper which I had a lift in when in RAF early 60s.
