The Albion LAD cabbed tippers belong to Walker’s Sugar, in Greenock and ran from the discharging ship’s side to the refinery close by. They featured in the Leyland Journal many years ago.

Overcast but dry in Hampshire this morning so here we go, Buzzer

Some heavy work there Buzzer, and the bloke tugging on the dolly is heading for disaster. Rope breaks, driver flies backwards smacking his head on the ground. Proper way, I was told, was to loop the end under the instep and stand on it.

Never did it that way myself though, well, perhaps once or twice, but I did try to be more vertical with one leg behind me, just in case.

I always used the loop method as I reckoned you could get it far tighter but the chap in the picture probably had the old rope not poly which was more prone to slipping a dolly, when I did round timber haulage remember got a clip round the ear for oiling sad’s and me boss said they only get lubricated with water and you will know what I am talking about when you get one of them under your chin, Buzzer
