Salvesen dropped Volvos quite early on, due to engine problems which where not dealt with satisfactory ,
I think they still had them at Grantham in the 90s when my friend Bernie Jamieson was TM there. We had a problem of cabs locking themselves and I rang him for advice. He said that they had had the same problem and now insisted that all drivers left a window open or take the keys with them when they jump out. Advice I follow personally to this day since the same thing has happened with my Berlingo.

Well whoever took a loaded Scania 8 up Sutton Bank was a very naughty boy…although, many years ago I took an Atki 8 wheeler up, loaded with road salt from Winsford, 150 Gardner and a 6 speed DB. No problem, #1 gear at the bottom, left it in #1, and let her do her stuff.
I was young and adventurous…Happy days.
There’s no weight limit on it, I followed an eight wheeler MAN bulk grain lorry up there a couple of years ago but he wasnt pulling any trees up though and was barely moving. When I did my driver training with Slaters transport the instructor said their Foden artics used it all the time loaded with steel, as Larry often says “a gear for every hill” with those! I always used the advised alternative caravan route when towing my caravan though.
It’s like the hills around here, most of the mishaps over the years have been with strangers who don’t know the area.
Pete.
Ayr Pete, but back in the day (when I woz a young lad), HGV’s were banned on Sutton Bank.
It’s many a year since I was round that area, I’ve no doubt things have changed…but tackling that 1 : 4 bank is not for the faint hearted

Another one for you, this time on the Donny Bypass from Richard Says.
Oily
Hello Oily yes A E Evans from Bishops Castle Shropshire ,and yes they have an 8 legger as well ,hauling out of Ransfords sawmills in which they are based .
They also have a couple of artics for finished timber. Years ago they were also egg merchants and had a Scania 4 boxvan for that work .
Ransfords were set after the war ,and the main haulier was Noel Morgan from Bishops Castle, later to become D N Morgan and moved over to Craven Arms when they expanded . Oily i know they did Scottish work mostly steel .
Oily got to say i have never come across the Matthews ST weonards ,dont think they were Shropshire based ,thank you Trevor

Ah well, that would be because the water level in the boiler would drop rapidly due to the incline and the safety plug would blow out. Actually I have a pic in a book of a Foden steamer being used to haul the paving machine up the bank in the fifties when it was being resurfaced so ignore my previous comment!
Pete.

Dean’s right: no apology required! It’s the subject that’s important and if the photo is superb, then that’s the icing on the cake. Like you I have a good few I took with an old 110 film camera and they form an invaluable record of lorries I drove decades ago.
The Spanish seem to have built rather more robust stepframe tilts than the rest in those days; or was that just their appearance and the multiple drop sides? Ro

I only had a fairly brief experience of a stepframe tilt, and quite frankly it was a nightmare,!!
There was something about Spanish reg trucks back then, particularly the cheese grater Pegaso’s, they oozed exotic character!

I agree: stepframe tilts were horrible. I didn’t mind tilts but me being only 5’4" I struggled to get the sheet over the rear end. Yes, Spanish trucks were exotic and different right up until they joined the EU when they were paid to scrap their characterful wagons. Here’s a pic I took in Pamplona of one in about 2000:
I love these Pegaso! Such an unique design. They had a reputation of good reliability. A few years ago, one of them, a rigid 1011 was still to be seen in the outskirts of Figueres from the road to Roses; no idea if it’s still there.

Ro,Any idea who the manufacturer of the trailer is ?
Pereco had an office on Poole docks back in the 1970’s/80’s so they must have been a large concern back then.

I’ll have a think, Dean. Spanish tilts had a very distinctive character; I think partly because their drop-sides were much higher than everyone else’s, or in some cases the bays were more strongly divided which gave the sides a ‘ribbed for extra pleasure’ effect The only Spanish trailer builder I can think of is Lecitrailer. Pyewacket may know, as he’s good on Spain. Ro
