This one was a bit of a bugger for overhang, especially in tight traffic. If you weren’t carefully you could sideswipe stuff on your blind side when making sharp turns. I did mostly European work with it, which was just as well as it had LHD. Ro2
we had ex Westermann lorries, had the axle swapped from the middle to the back.

AdeHi lurpak ,got to say can not remember those , did they stay long ? Westermann i think had a base up in Shropshire some where ,regards Keith
Yes they did ,at the old Rednal airfield ,i think they were something top do with Mel Jones who later ran milk tankers ,did alot out of Tetra Pak at Wrexham ,with Westerman using DAFs as i remember ,thank you Trevor
Thanks to Ray Smyth, pyewacket947v and Lawrence Dunbar for the pics

Oily,that’s a nice looking six wheeler,and 410 bhp in it,that’s nearly 2 x 220 ■■■■■■■■
I followed a loaded Scania 8 wheeled tipper from Thirsk and up Sutton Bank (1 in 4) and it went up like it were empty,I know some have even bigger engines in those rigids.
Well whoever took a loaded Scania 8 up Sutton Bank was a very naughty boy…although, many years ago I took an Atki 8 wheeler up, loaded with road salt from Winsford, 150 Gardner and a 6 speed DB. No problem, #1 gear at the bottom, left it in #1, and let her do her stuff.
I was young and adventurous …Happy days.

Funnily enough i was passed, with ease by an Iveco rigid, basically an 18 tonner with a rear tag axle so whats that? 24 ton gross? Moffet on the back and no sign of towing hitch, badge on the door rated 510hp don’t suppose he has any hill climbing problems.

There’s no weight limit on it, I followed an eight wheeler MAN bulk grain lorry up there a couple of years ago but he wasnt pulling any trees up though and was barely moving. When I did my driver training with Slaters transport the instructor said their Foden artics used it all the time loaded with steel, as Larry often says “a gear for every hill” with those! I always used the advised alternative caravan route when towing my caravan though. It’s like the hills around here, most of the mishaps over the years have been with strangers who don’t know the area.
Pete.
Yuill & Dodds used to have a 164 530 8wheel tipper cheers Ray

No,no weight limit.Sutton Bank has a mandatory caravan ban Pete, alternative route is signposted at roundabout near where I live.Loaded wagons are up and down it all day, from four wheelers to 44t artics.

Yes, the one with the modified sun visor… Salvesen dropped Volvos quite early on, due to engine problems which where not dealt with satisfactory , I think Guys where pretty rare though we did have a Big J 4wheel fridge at the Droitwich Depot in the mid 70s. It was not a unpleasant motor to drive, far cry from my previous experiences with Invincible 8 wheeled tippers, the less said the better,!
