Sorry rward that was a mess
My ex father inlaw was a lorry driver in the 60’s , he did a regular run from a yard in Dronfield nr Chesterfield to Manchester…his daughter my ex used to go with him in the school hols, he set off at 4.30am regular as clockwork…they traveled over Owler Bar towards Fox house…as you approach the junction at Fox house the pub (Fox house ) is straight in front and the Sheffield rd comes from the right…she said to her dad look at that funny man …he was stood outside the pub her dad went white as a sheet said yes i did see him…he was dressed as a Cavalire sought of1700’s period dress…2 people see the same thing makes you think.
A few years ago the wife and set off on one of our unplanned ‘lets go catch a ferry and see where we end up’ tours of Europe. We ended up in Amsterdam on the first night and Arnhem on the second. But we arrived in Oosterbeek a little on the late side to find overnight accomodation either there or in Arnhem itself.
Being as dear old Dad had been with ■■■ Corp in the race to relieve the paras at Arnhem, wife said we really ought to stay to look around more the next day. So we slept in the car at the Oosterbeek cemetery…well I did, untill she was convinced she had seen the ghost of a British soldier walking past the car at 0130 in the morning, and woke me up to tell me!. She could not, and had not been to sleep herself being on the rather spooked side bless her. I told her there was no one, or thing around, and even if it was the ghost of a British soldier, it wouldnt do us any harm…all to no effect.
We decided, or she did, that we would drive back to the motorway and go to the nearest service area to try and rest. Not far from the cemetery the unmistakeable shape and kit of a British soldier crossed the road in front of us lit by the headlights of the car, I too was a little unsure of what I had seen. A little further on was another shape of a soldier flitting through the moonlight, very strange.
We made the services after a few miles and she settled down and slept like a child. Me? I was awake all night with the traffic passing by! I can sleep like a child in a truck cab, but not in a car!
The next day we spent looking around the Hartenstein Hotel and the town of Arnhem…We also saw and spoke to several British Soldiers who explained that they had been on a night time map exercise in the area…lesson 1…all is not what it appears to be
