Overweight vosa pull

our 7.5ton truck got a tug on the m6 today resulting in the driver being fined £60 for being 700kg overweight, will the company get a fine aswell as they loaded it?the driver can only speak about 3 words of english so he couldnt say what vosa had told him, thats what happens when you employ brummies!!

I’d imagine so.

As an operator there is likely to be another visit where they may check records, documents and invoices, all of which may go towards your OCRS score.

Luckily 9.3% comes underneath the £120 fine which is triggered at 10% overload. £200 if it is 20%

There is also the chance the company will get done for exceeding an axle weight as well as a gross weight.

There is no get out clause, it is an absolute offence :frowning:

+1

My company tried sending me out in my 7.5 tonner with 5 tons on the headboard. That put me 2 tons overweight.

If I knew how to upload photos, I could show you what weights my ex-employer had me doing on a daily basis! :open_mouth:

I’ve always kept the photos on my phone for if / when I have a ‘bad day’, to remind me where and why I left there.

Try that from an I pad Rog. Sweet fa happens, and as I’m close to putting it under my back wheels (that’s how my last lap top died) I’ll gracefully retire from the pic posting business! :smiling_imp:

If you using an ipad then try using photo bucket app. It gives you a link to insert in the parameter between the picture handlers.

many years ago, in the days before VOSA, I dispatched a large microwave generator to London on a flatbed 7½ tonner.

I wasn’t there when they loaded it but, knowing that it was at the max for that truck I found exactly where the CG was and marked it with white paint. I worked it out and told the driver how far back the white mark should be on the loading platform.

When he was stopped and weighed he was 100kg over on the front axle. This was because he, in his wisdom, had loaded it against the headboard. I wrote to them and explained, saying that he had thought it safer that way, and they let him and us off.

Here goes…

Would the extra rates cover the fine though? hmmm

So you knew you were overweight and still took the load?

If no, please proceed to last line of post.

If yes, you deserve everything you could have got. Its not just about limiting the amount of freight a vehicle can carry, its about safety and load security. When you go out overweight you put other road users at risk and should be ashamed of yourself. If you are overweight, or even think you might be, tell the TM to take a running jump until you are sure it is both safe and legal to roll.

After all, it is a very rare TM who will own up to sending a driver out like that, so it will be you that takes the fall.

Thank you for your time, have a nice evening.

Not really, all depends on the design weight to whether there’s an actual road safety issue. Just because something’s legal doesn’t mean it’s safer either. If you overload something like an Iveco Daily by 750kg and get pulled you’ll have to take 750kg off and put it in another vehicle. Well you could put it in one of those little Vauxhall Combo vans and everything would then be legal but the stopping distance of the little Combo van would be more than the, technically overladen and illegal, Daily with the 750kg still in it.

Half my family (Mainly extended) and my best mate are from the Midlands. My great Grandfather was the Wendsbury mayor in the 50’s. I understand them perfectly.
They even take the mick out of their own accent, so I wouldn’t be too offended.
